Another garbage year for the club and fans, which started off last summer with high expectations of new blood and new owners wanting to bankroll the club for promotion. Warnock almost walks because he was shafted by Bates, and the takeover drags on making sure the manager has no cash to bring in the players he wanted. We lose out on players and we have no chance of getting the 'icing on the cake' players the manager was expecting. We flatter to deceive on the field with some huffing and puffing and then see us turn in some dire performances. The deal finally gets done, but not with the original party, and the mood lifts around the place. The fans are laughing and have high expectations because of what they've said in the media. The team turn in 3 fantastic performances against top teams, and actually played football instead of lumping it up field. Then as usual for us, the wheels come off and we look dire and have horrible results against sides we should be capable of walloping. Transfer window kicks in and the only players we seem to be linked to are old men past there sell by date, and the rumor's are out there that we may be selling Becchio and Byram. fans are again disillusioned and start calling for the manager to be sacked, and slating the new owners for not putting their money where there mouth is. This should be such a great time to be a Leeds fan, because Bates is no longer a director. We're all happy about that but have yet to see commitment instead of words from the new boys. Getting rid of Warnock as well as bates may be the answer, but the big question is who do you replace him with. I would say Warnock should be given until the end of the season, because whoever comes in will not do any better without funds, and on paper our team should be more than capable of competing at the top. After all the league is poor as we're only 2-points from the top 6. Gus Poyet is being chased by Blackburn, and he would be a decent punt to do something at ER. But who else is there as its no good going for a lower league manager or an untried bloke, as we need instant results because we've all invested our money for the last 8-years and seen nothing in return. Paul Lambert for me, but he's still got a job with Villa, but maybe not for too much longer. Who is better than Warnock, and I would say not many, so are we being hasty in calling for his head. I too am pissed off with our performances and results, but a change now?
Quite simply, nobody is better than Warnock without backing. No manager, even blue nose likely to win promotion without substantial investment. There has been the odd exception ie Blackpool but without investment they come back down
Who is better than warnock? There are an incredible number of managers who are better than Warnock, I said this when we appointed him when people were asking the same question Half realistic targets who are better than Warnock include: Gus Poyet Gianfranco Zola Paul Lambert Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Mick McCarthy Simon Grayson (coulda just kept him instead of appointing Warnock) Ian Holloway (woulda been able to get him when we hired Warnock) Dougie Freedman (woulda been able to get him when we hired Warnock) Tony Mowbray Roberto Martinez Roberto Di Matteo Paulo Di Canio All of these are completely off the top of my head who I believe every single one of are better than Warnock and I really don't think any of them are hugely unrealistic either
Josh lets look at some of those names: Zola unproven without cash or almost a full team of loaned players from Italy. MaCarthy agreed but he's gone now Holloway agreed but he's back home now. Freedman unproven and not doing too well at Bolton Martinez no chance Prem manager Di Matteo no chance prem manager Di Canio a loose cannon and as yet unproven at a higher level Mowbray agreed but well settled and backed at Boro Ole Gunnar a gamble but could be good Poyet agreed Lambert agreed We have no chance of replacing Warnock right now with any of the above names, so the question is still, who is there better than Warnock
Poyet saw us as a stepping stone, I can't imagine he'd want to come back. Zola isn't that good a manager, as he proved at West Ham. He has the entire Udinese reserve team playing for him, that's why they're doing well. Lambert is at a premiership team, he did very well at Norwich and I can't see why on earth he'd join us anyway. Villa are terrible, but they were terrible before he joined and he's trying to instill a new philosophy of playing and in terms of giving youth a chance. Doubt he'll get sacked, at least not yet anyway. Solskjaer's done very well in Norway, he'll be holding out for a premiership job though. And he's ex scum, you really think he'd be accepted with welcome arms? McCarthy is a decent manager, but he's in the same bracket as Warnock really, with the exception of he can keep teams in the premiership up. Grayson, could've kept him but I think we needed a change. Holloway was sick of the lack of investment at Blackpool, he would've known it would've been exactly the same at Leeds. Freedman, possibly. Mowbray loves Middlesborough, he wouldn't leave to manage us. Martinez is a premiership manager who's been looked at by the likes of Liverpool, be a tad more realistic. Di Matteo who just won the FA Cup and Champions League double with Chelsea coming to the championship? Really? Di Canio needs backing. And he's a bit of a loose cannon. Depends if the board can put up with him. I'd imagine most can't.
I think Warnock should get to the end of the season, but if we don't add some quality to the team now we won't finish top 6. This isn't a top 6 team. Depressing to see that Reading are talking about loaning Danny Wellbeck and we're talking about signing Blackstock, who is just a poor man's McCormack. We don't need more Championship quality players, we need some Prem quality ones down the spine of the team. So far the GFH lot have made a lot of noise and done very little.
Warnock will stay until the end of the season and hopefully then pensioned off. He has been a huge disappointment as manager, bringing in poor players and playing dreadful football. And I don't buy this nonsense about him not having the resources. He's had more money to spend than Grayson and managed to bring into garbage like Varney, Peltier, Norris and Gray.
As i have just said those are all better. Your opinion differs obviously but they are all better imo. I have never liked Warnock, his football style is terrible
Josh, not having a go, but have you ever watched a Warnock team play in the flesh, or is your assessment solely based on tv & radio commentary? Is it also safe to assume that you believe our performance against Everton, for instance, was also crap, being a Warnock team?
Warnock has had backing, not enough but he hasn't gone penniless in his rebuild. He has wasted the majority of the chunk he had on Peltier playing him out of position and a few questionable signings. I am not happy with his tactics and news of his transfer targets do not inspire me. I remember making a post after the takeover went through saying I had a lack of excitement, I wasn't sure if it was because it dragged on too long or I was listening to my own doubts about how much GFH really have to invest. Interesting that Haigh is all over twitter and the media promising exciting times and he wants bums on seats, not heard a word from him since the transfer window opened, who said he doesn't know how to run a club, he has certainly learned how to stay out the spotlight during a transfer window.
Lambert did you see his defence last night a shamblesso why would he be better nobody would be better without investment its as simple as that get off the blokes back you wanted Simon out so you got your wishes
Well the thing about lack of resources was a fair point - until the takeover went through. He's looking at signing Clint Hill. Get rid before he's allowed to sign more past it journeymen in positions that don't need strengthening.
Marko, didn't you hear Warnock's latest radio interview? He said that he's being linked with umpteen players, many of whom he has no intention of pursuing. He will only reveal targets once there is solid news to report. So, on that basis, how do you know that he's trying to sign Hill? Answer - you don't. You're just speculating like everyone else, pointing a needless finger at Warnock, and causing unnecessary unrest amongst us fans. Why?
Exactly this. The only players he's signed this window are Alan Tate - on loan presumably until he finds a better player in the window - and Ryan Hall, hardly the 30-something, over the hill journeyman everyone is so adamant he signs. If he does sign Hill and Derry, that's the time to complain. But the papers will inevitably link them to Warnock because it makes sense and they need a story.
It's all we have at the moment. Do you really blame anyone for asking questions and being concerned? The concern is a combination of not having made any signings and being linked with old has beens - two signs that we still can't compete in the transfer market
We've made 1 signing! And who's doing the linking with old has beens? Newspapers looking for readers? Do you really believe all you read in the papers? Perhaps you'd like me to float a few stories linking us with Messi, Ronaldo et al. Would that make us all happy? No - you wouldn't believe it. So why do you believe all the other names? And then discuss it like it's going to happen. Do you really think we're going to sign to 10s of players linked to us?
I have seen warnock team's in the flesh. In all honesty and much to my dissapointment I have not seen his leeds team in the flesh but probably 40% of games have been on tv, the rest barring maybe 2 or 3 games I have listened to. I understand watching games on tv isn't the same however I really do feel as though I am qualified to state my dissapointment to the way we play Saying this, there have been good performances but only odd ones here and there. We don't even look confident when we are winning, it always looks like we are capable of conceding a goal I understand what your saying with linking though, but thats not my problem with him. I honestly believe wherever he has been successful he has had a very good backroom staff behind him, I do not believe he has that at Leeds United
