from BBC 1027: TRANSFER LATEST Norwich manager Chris Hughton tells the Eastern Daily Press he does not expect a busy transfer window at Carrow Road. "January is notoriously not a great time to bring in players," he says. "You have to make sure they are the right players at the right price and value which is why at this moment not a lot of business has been done."
loans like that are relatively risk-free though. they know they won't be able to keep him whether they stay up or not. just pay the loan fee (which would be considerable i expect) and hope united pay the wages.
of course, this will be met with dismay and anger by those fans who simply don't understand the difficulties surrounding the transfer window. the only clubs who tend to do business at this time of year are the desperate and the rich. value for money doesn't really exist (unless you strike lucky) and the most prized assets, goal scorers, are few and far between - and everyone wants them!
i meant generally reading won't go wild on spending supers battersea - yeah just saw that pop up - thing is, he's not going to come out and say that we are desperate for a striker is he, or any other players. Cagey.
normally yes but its not always the case. i'd be very surprised if he goes to reading - he could walk into much bigger clubs than that and play every week. edit. thinking about it though, maybe that's why united would prefer him to go to reading! so he doesn't affect any of the better sides around them? but then none of them are exactly putting pressure on them are they! who knows...
Last thing Hughton needs to say is we're in a spending mood. No doubt a few chats going on but no one wants to show their hand too early especially in the Jan window.
exactly- why show your hand? You can get a better deal if you can convince the seller you don't really need it.
i think he's telling it how it is. he's preparing people for if we don't manage to get anyone in, whilst also playing his transfer kitty close to his chest
He goes on to say in that article that the later you leave it (in the window) the greedier clubs become to the point where average players can command gross fees. One good thing about Lambert's tenure - he had normally identified his targets before the window opened and moved fast to sign them before the rest of the clubs had a chance to act. This is both shrewd and sensible, as you get the whole month of January out of them as well as the remainder of the season when the window is closed
You're probably right but I'd not be surprised to suddenly hear about a signing out of left field that no one's considered.
Just a small thought, but what does this say about the state of our National side, when our top teams are willing to loan out what is arguably one of our top 3 strikers!? Would love to see Welbeck here, but that's even less realistic than the horrific Chamakh rumour! Hooper rumour did come from Nursey - and I would be surprised if we started our offer at 30k - but I have a feeling there is more to this one. Having said that, he is a douche. Once I (mistakenly) called him out on something I thought he had wrong and he DM'ed me for almost an entire morning being quite upset about it. Word has it, though, that Ibrahim Toure enquiries went nowhere.
Manchester United and other big clubs rarely sign players in January. The January transfer window is for the desperate clubs who need to pick themselves up to avoid relegation, get into Europe or get promoted. Manchester United did sign Obertan and another player from the same club a few years a go in January, but sent them straight back out on loan. Also, Tottenham have agreed to sign a player, but he's not coming until the summer. Chelsea went for Ba because there was a £7mill release clause so the transfer fee wasn't going to be inflated and they wanted to get him before anyone else does, they also have an underperforming striker in Torres. There's all this talk of Manchester United signing Zaha for £12mill, which is a ridiculous price. But I can't see that happening, if at all, until the summer. Still waiting on Ronaldinho to sign for Chelsea, the Sun said it would happen 7 years a go and I'm still waiting. Starting to think that was a lie...
Didn't Newcastle sign Pappiss Cissé (sp) last Jan - and he went on to ignite their second half of the season? I know that's only 1 example and to counter that, you've got Carroll and Torres going for a combined £85m
Good point regarding Cisse and Torres. Carrol only came about because Liverpool needed someone to replace Torres, and that was a hugely inflated transfer fee. He was probably only worth £10-12mill and went for £35mill.
nursey is not a reliable source on norwich matters. he's a fan yes, but i'm not sure he's ever got anything right other than lambert to villa. and he SHOULD know that - he covers villa in his job!
I fail to see how Andy Carroll was even worth £10m, about £5m would probably have been about right. I know he's injured at the moment, but he has hardly pulled up any trees at West Ham, I think he might have scored one consolation goal in a game that was already lost if my mem ory serves me correctly.
I disagree with that logic. As he can't help anyone take points from United, surely you'd send him to a club with the best chance of taking points off of the bigger sides. I'd say that because we're more defensively solid than Reading, by adding a few goals we'd be more likely to give the bigger clubs a proper game, and so sending Welbeck to us would be more beneficial. Although I suppose you could argue we're already reasonably likely to take some points off the bigger sides, so helping a side who have a very small chance of doing so to do it would be more helpful, I don't know.
