The 60' without a doubt, though your mention of Magazine - and oh what a ****ing band they were!!! Almost sways me, as someone said, bar some rare exceptions, eg Capt Beefheart, the NY Dolls -the 70's were largely ****e glam rock, prog rock dirge-like bollox until punk and new wave. The 60's paved the way for it all - Doors Kinks Hendrix Stones etc, early ragga, early Van the Man, Ray Charles, Otis and MOTOWN!! It was the first youth culture, the young uns had money, singles vinyl was born and the Top Ten began. There were festivals and some great drugs, plus the impact new instruments had on new artists' creativity - everything from the Hammond Organ to the Gibson Guitar. The 60's folks, the 60's were the most creative era of music by far.
I wrote pish mostly 'cause you cited the Stones. Cunts to a man, especially that **** of a lead singer.

I love the cure though.. I remember taking music to the primary school disco once I had things like go west, tears for fears, nick kershaw, Adam ant... And the spitting image song..
I love the Cure as ell - would have them in a different category because it would suit my agenda to do so My Primary disco was the wombles and Showaddy waddy
