We had this topic come up recently, i think. We played the Rowdies in the 80s (before my time) and they haven't been back since, but that's it as far as i know.
City should, lots of teams here that would provide decent preseason opposition. City should play LA, San Jose or Portland, then I could go watch a game.
Wouldn't really be a city team or a propper match ellewoods though. Sorry mate you will just have to hop on a plane next August and meet up with all the other exiles who gather in Hull for the first couple of games of the season. You know you want to do it! Avenues pub before the first game of the season is the place to be not Paradise California FFS
Yes in the Team history thread. I think the Rowdies went to England though. The Rowdies, who play here in Tampa Bay, won the NASL this season so it would be cool if they could do something like like that again. @johnfirth - I was supposed to take an all footie trip this coming February however my buddy had to back out due to his finances - or lack thereof. @ellewoods - and having had to postpone that trip, I'd fly to the West Coast to see them play. I'd LOVE to see a game in Seattle. Other BPL teams tour the States......
There was a second leg to the game with the rowdies and City went to Tampa and played them there. The Rowdies won in the second leg. It is on this website if you want to take a look. http://www.nasljerseys.com/Friendlies/Teams/Rowdies Friendlies.htm Other teams do tour the States. I imagine the players would like it, plus it couldn't hurt to increase our profile here. I actually thought we messed up with the Altidore situation. We were getting mentioned on ESPN a good amount and we never really tried to capitalize on that. With Myhill being born here, and Altidore on the team if we had signed 1 or 2 more people from the US especially someone from the national team we could have created a fan base. The only reason there are so many Fulhum fans here is because of Dempsy we should have tired to do a similar thing. As far as marketing goes why sign so many Irish players, Ireland only has 7 million people, we have 315 million.
I can't imagine City ever playing here honestly. It is possible when they get back into the BPL, but still pretty doubtful. If I can swing a single game this year back at the KC I'll be a happy camper.
Great points. Thanks for the link. I'm old enough to remember that however I was just not into soccer - er football at the time.
A lot of fair weather plastics came out of the woodwork in the US when we got promoted to the Prem. They all disappeared when we got relegated. A few of us diehards like John and myself go over every year to watch a few games. We were both there last August/September for the first few games and have been supporters for 50 years or more. I'll be over for the playoffs/Wembley again and the last few games if we make automatic.
Nope sadly. Last time Hull City played in the USA was during the Don Robinson era of the 80's when they beat Rodney Marshies Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Arrow Air Cup. Over 2 legs in Hull and Tampa. Sadly i missed it due to a pre-booked holiday at that time. But yes it would be nice to do a USA tour at some point soon.
Agreed. City should also include Colorado and one of the New York teams on the way home. 5 game tour and a fabulous vacation for us fans. What a way to start the PL season on August 17th 2013 eh ?
Portland gets an English team visiting pretty much every season. I saw them play Sunderland, Preston & Coventry while I lived there. Villa went this year and I think it was Man Citeh last year. Most visiting teams play the NW swing (Vancouver-Seattle-Portland), three great places to visit and three very passionate sets of fans (and decent weather for footy). Timbers Supporters The Timbers had capacity crowds for every game last year despite coming bottom of the league. It helps in Portland that there is no NFL team and no Major League Baseball or Ice Hockey.
I don't think City will get their passports out for the foreseeable future. That Far East tour saw to that. I would suggest that the Canadian and American supporters start up a section of the OSC and then get reduced travel rates for group travel.
Only major English teams would get a a game in the US, it's all about money when teams tour there, Chelsea, Utd, City & Liverpool are known teams over there. Unless we get in the PL for about 5 years in a row & be competitive then I don't see us going any further than Portugal. The only way we would get any recognition is if we signed US players, same with when we had Whitmore & Goodison, I was in Jamaica wearing my City shirt in 2002 & people knew the team, even last year I had a talk with a guy about them. This is why Utd buy players from Korea & Japan, yes they are already big there, but having big players makes them even more valuable.
"A lot of fair weather plastics came out of the woodwork in the US when we got promoted to the Prem. They all disappeared when we got relegated." That is one hell of a generalisation!
It's not only big BPL teams that come here. I watched Bolton play the Rowdies here last summer. Then Newcaslte play Orlando a week later.
We would get games. The MLS makes a big deal of foreign clubs coming here as it is part of their whole strategy on becoming a quality league. It would also be televised probably not nationally but every team has a local channel.
Ooow dont mess with Greeney she is a fine woman and been a city fan since some of you lot where just a glimmer in her daddys eyes. I met up with her and her family the day my son got sworn in as a UK citizen in Houston Texas and they are a delightfull bunch. On another note I always make the trip over first games of the season and meet up with others from far away if you want to join the 1,000,000 mile club this year get yer flights booked. Melbourne tiger and Canada tiger made it last year
