Whilst on the taxi theme, I believe we're now in the period where Jay can start to talk to other clubs. After an early season flourish would you now offer him a contract or let it run out? Personally I like Jay, I think he's a good player who links up well but he's just not enough of a goal threat for a promotion chasing team or indeed - hopefully - A Premier League one. I think the Allams quoted when sacking Nick that Jay was on 12k a week when we called him back from Millwall and that's a decent wedge to free up. E$ither way next season I cant see him being a regular starter so I'd lean towards saying thanks for your efforts but perhaps it's best for both parties to part.
Controversial, but I'd give him another 12 to 18 months. He's still young, I think he's been decent this season, I know some of you fantasy fans think he should have scored 100 + goals so far this season, he's not that striker. He's one that always gets to double figures and supports a 20 goal a season striker. Everything he does is decent movement, intelligence, hold up and assists. I also think as he has been schooled at Arsenal, he'll benefit hugely from the extra time and space on the ball that playing in the Premier League allows.
Not sure I'd want him in the premier league but unless we get another two strikers in, I would keep him
Think he's got double figures once in his career so far. Hes on 6 for us now, he's been sat on that now since september. Not going to lie, he's improved since we first got him, BUT that doesn't make him decent enough. He's league one standard at best along with McLean. needs 10 chances before he flukes 1!
A good coach would get twice as many goals out of him than we are currently getting. The finishing problem is in his mind. Sort that and he'd be good enough and add imagine a Jay Simpson with confindence and hunger?
Simpson and McLean are different players and to say they are League 1 players is harsh. One thing for sure is that we need another striker in if we are to compete for top 2
We saw Jay Simpson with confidence & hunger @ the start of the season. Unfortunately his form has deteriorated at a crucial time
I think you're being a tad harsh, for me he's a mid-table flirting with play-offs striker rather than one pushing hard for promotion. I can see him doing well at something like under Nigel Clough at Derby. Hasnt he got steadily worse since Bruce publicly said "if he carries on his current form he'll be offered a new deal"? Either he got complcent, pressure got to him or he doesnt want to stay....
I think we will keep him for the season but his chance of getting a new deal here are getting slimmer by the day
Simpson's a good striker, he ends up playing with his back to goal too much but he does a good job of it. He's doing nothing different in that respect to at the beginning of the season when everyone loved him. This 'finishing problem' he has is just made up. How often do you see Simpson square in front of goal and miss? I can't even remember a time. It's always half chances like little headers and crosses that fall behind him and he swings at but misses, not really big chances. Compared to the chances Fryatt missed last season and Aluko and Koren have missed this season it's nothing. We never get strikers in behind, one-on-one with the keeper. We don't play that way, our game plan is more about using the wings and getting crosses in from the byline so inevitably the goals aren't all going to come from the front two. Aluko hasn't scored since Birmingham either and Simpson has at least had a few assists in that time so presumably Aluko is **** too?
I admire your loyalty but Ive seen him miss loads of sitters. Wasnt it TWS or Lester (defo over Xmas anyway) when he was unmarked, smack bang in the middle of the goal, perfect ball on to his head and he placed it literally to the only area the keeper could save it ie straight at him. And has anyone said Simpson is "****"?
Like I said on another thread Simpson cannot go until at least the summer. Assuming we bring in one more striker, with McLean gone and Fryatt out for the season, to get rid of Simpson would leave us too light on Strikers.
The fact he hasn't been offered a new contract before now means the club doesn't want him. That's why his form has dipped. And some of the garbage posted about him that's he only plays with his back to goal.....honestly get a grip. All strikers have to some point otherwise they'd never be able to see the effing ball.......
Like I said on the other thread, Simpson missed a header in the middle of the area. If that makes him a poor finisher, why was I criticised all last seaosn for complaining when Fryatt kept going through on goal and not even getting a shot off? Equally Aluko this season has missed some incredible chances in the area, in space, with his feet not head. Koren against Leeds was ****ing pathetic when he was through on goal and just lobbed it miles wide. If Simpson did that there'd have been ****ing uproar.
