On a seperate note who do you think will leave this window? Anyone? Obviously quite a lot depends on who comes in but I think we could see quite a few leaving permanently or on loan.

Yep. For example, £12m in the Italian market gets you a player the standard of Ramirez, whereas in the domestic market gets you a player the standard of Sturridge.

There are some good players to be plucked from the Championship, as we have seen with Clyne and Jay Rodriguez, but the big timers are a real waste of money. The overseas players are just embarassingly better than the English ones. Lets hope the academy continues to top up the home contingent.

We have all enjoyed gung ho football in the past in England and some fans still associate passion with good players. They feel it is okay being poor as long as you run around a lot and get angry when thwarted. Hopefully, the modern academies will improve skills and tactics in England players (without losing the passion totally).

I worry a little about penalties, but other than that Astori at 85% effectiveness is probably as good as Fonte at 100% effectiveness. And the tools he brings like being good at headers and having a physical presence are really pretty basic that translate wherever you go and are also exactly what Saints lack. If he has to boot some long balls for a couple of weeks before he gets used to how we like to pass or some subtle nuance to Fonte's habits that's okay. And I doubt it takes him a full 1/2 season to get up to speed.

Part of the problem with Saints is that many of the players were used to playing in more traditional 4-4-2-ish schemes against teams playing the same. The rest of Europe has moved on, and the Premier League is finally starting to follow but it hasn't reached the Championship level yet. So you could argue that actually Astori and Ramirez and top foriegn players like that are Premier League-ready and already play the way Saints want, and it is the rest of the team that has had to catch up with them. Since they have now already had half a season to do that, it shouldn't be as big an issue.

Yeah has just now to me:

"Birmingham desperate to shift Butland. Keeping an eye on that one this week."

Butland was benched for Colin Doyle in the cup this weekend, although I don't think that counts for much.

Highly doubt we'd be in for Butland. We've got our young keeper for the future in Gazzaniga. If we signed a keeper, I think he'd be of the experienced, safe pair of hands variety.

Probably Seabourne, De Ridder, Chaplow and Forte are the most likely, if a buyer can be found; Seabourne may be the hardest. Depends if we get a winger in of more potency than the knight!

Lets hope anyone who wants to buy Steve didn't watch his performance yesterday.

I got so attached to the squad we've had over the last couple of years, that it sucks to see any of them leave. :( I miss Hammond and Sharp. Chaplow's a great guy too, but I feel like he'd have played yesterday if Adkins had any intention to keep him. He probably could have done a job as well, considering how magnificently he played in that cup tie against United two years ago.
