Not wanting to read through 10 pages...How much would he improve us? What side does he play? Does he speak English? How likely is it that we will actually get him?

1) A lot, he's a better player than Fonte and Yoshida.
2) I doubt it really matters, but I think he's left footed.
3) Possibly some, doubtful. Doesn't take long to learn Football English, and we have a few Italian speakers at the team.
4) Judging by all the reports, quite.

Cheers Dan. I'll try and keep up with this thread now in the hope that a player I know very little about signs for us

Saw an Italian football guy draw similarities to Michael Dawson. From the couple of Astori games I've seen, it seems a fair enough comparison. He's not a heavy hitter, but a technically sound defender.

If we do sign new players this window then we need to get players that have Premier league experience. Players that need half the season to adjust are no good. We had a bad start to the season because so few players knew what to expect in PL. More foreign imports might look flashy but we need dependability.

Swansea seem to be doing all right. Clearly premier league experience is not everything.

There is too little value in the domestic market for us to be able to afford an english player in the same calibre of 'foreign imports' like astori and ramirez.

Yep. For example, £12m in the Italian market gets you a player the standard of Ramirez, whereas in the domestic market gets you a player the standard of Sturridge.
