So you think that is normal behaviour, do you? I can count on one hand the number of times that has happened at SMS/The Dell. Most teams behave themselves...are you sure you aren't Millwall in disguise?
It was a cute display, few flares, Pompey chants, that little jumping thing you did and the champions of Europe song. At least you tried ay
Did we ever get paid for the damage Pompey fans did? If not, perhaps Cortese could add the cost of those seats to the Chelsea bill
Will you give us some small plastic flags so we can make a good atmosphere at your place like your fans?
Just a bunch of Millwall wannabes who have spent far too many evenings at their Mum and Dad's watching Danny Dyer's Deadliest Doorknobs type programmes. Well hard innit bruv, you ****!
It wasn't a good game, it really wasn't. At least in the 2nd half anyway. We were ****ing awful in the 2nd half.
OK.. I want to intervene and say something... First of all an apology... I was reading the thread about our fans being 'scum' and a 'disgrace' and I got the distinct impression that all 4600 fans that went to St Mary's today were given that label. Hence I posted this thread on this board as a sort of defence. I apologise if it came across as me trying to act like a real karnt praising our fans for ripping out seats, throwing missiles into the home end and chucking flares onto the pitch. The smoke bomb issue. We let off about 7 or 8 of which one was chucked onto the pitch. I was right by a couple of them when they went off and all it was was something letting off blue smoke. It can't do much harm at all. It added a bit to the atmosphere and I have no problems with them tbh. We did the same at Leeds and there were no issues. I'll leave on this note. I have no problem at all with Southampton and your fans but labelling all our fans as scum when it's a small minority is annoying and frustrating to those of us who travel up and down the country following the team. I've done all away games this season (apart from Everton and Norwich) going to Sunderland, Swansea and Southampton and there has been no violence of any sort. I hope you lads stay up I really do simply because you have a solid fan base and are a good side. I hope to return to St Mary's for the league game in March and hopefully it will be another good game.
I found the "Champions of Europe" chant pretty entertaining considering they were the first ever holders to be knocked out of the group stages. The smoke bombs and air bombs didn't "add to the atmosphere", they were slightly reminiscent of a schoolboy with his first pack of fun snaps. Ripping out chairs is just pathetic, even more so in the third round of the FA Cup against a team that bears no grudge against you. What purpose did the act serve? Was it meant to be intimidating? Because it wasn't.
Olly...hopefully this thread has run its course now.....Pompey have never been contenders for loudest away fans at our ground, we've always drowned them out??
I think you are grown up enough to know that there will always be a minority who will over react if you decide to stir things up, just ignor it, and realise that tarring everyone with the same brush isn't just a Saints trait, but if it happens to you several times, take time off to wonder why. There is no place for pyrotechnics in a football Stadium, the smoking ban isn't there as a cancer precaution, remember what happened a few years ago in another Stadium in the north of England.
Smoke Bombs do not have the potential for injury of a flare or firework but they are still pointless and potentially dangerous. People with asthma and lung-difficulties if stuck in a confined space (such as packed in a football stadium) with a smoke bomb can have serious and life threatening problems from inhaling smoke like that. I've got asthma myself and I doubt it would kill me as mine isn't that serious but it would do a real number on me if I was within 20 yards of it. I went to a show at a theater a couple of years ago and was sat in the second row, they let of smoke bombs on the stage which for some reason were aimed almost directly into the crowd and I got a lungful of it and ended the evening coughing up blood. My own fault as they did have a warning in the programme and I didn't have my inhaler with me, but if some muppet did that the football I would be similarly unprepared. Not to mention the fact that people who let them off at the football aren't doing it to 'improve the atmosphere' (Why does being clouded in noxious fumes make you sing louder or support your team more vehemently?), they are doing that because they a daft little wannabe hooligans, probably with a scarf wrapped around their face and a hoodie up over their head. And pulling seats out is just dumb, let's not even bother talking about that. If it was a fierce rival in an important game I'd not be surprised if there were some mugs doing their best hooligan impression, but don't quite know why they felt the need to do it in a tepid third round thumping of a much smaller team with no rivalry whatsoever, but each to their own! That being said, I don't hold anything against Chelsea because they've got a small section of twats in their traveling fans, their support for the most part was good, songs were a little dull at times and they were pretty quiet in the first half before they took the lead but once they did they were clearly enjoying themselves for obvious reasons. Do think it's daft that they take up 80% of the Northam with visiting supporters though.
Can believe Pompey were louder than us. Always brought a VG noisy following to the bridge, the best from the south coast
Smoke bombs/flairs are quite amusing and add a certain continental exoticness to a game. Plus, you can't really get on your high horse and complain about them considering several were let off during the last derby at Fratton Park. I do find it amusing that the thread starter avoided the point about supporting Wycombe though.
