To be honest, all I want to see is some transfer activity that shows the club have some real intent to compete in the future. I think we need a DM, but as long as we keep our players and/or improve the strength of the squad I will be happy.

It shows how out of touch he is.

I dont think theres a single fan that expects him to buy messi.

Just because we dont want second rate nobodies he accuses us of expecting too much .

His standards have dropped , as an arsenal FAN , mine havent.

    twonk.

I don't think he was literally meaning Messi.

    You've just proved his point.

ah i see , he has accepted that he will have to rest on his laurels now.

Cant compete with the big spenders so dont bother even trying.

Well his 7 year old laurels are getting a bit threadbare .

Even Liverpool have won silver in that period and we all know how bad they are.

That Carling Cup final was a watershed for a lot of people.

I think a LOT of people lost faith in him then .

We FINALLY got 90 minutes away from glory , still couldnt take Birmingham City.

Am i expecting too much ?

What irritates me most is the backtracking and contradictions. First he says that we need to strengthen everywhere then he says the opposite.

Its bullsh1t , we never have a clue what hes doing until he does it.

And when he does it we all collectively say " is that it ? "

The powers that be make out that some big things are coming , well we all heard that before.

You start to expect less and less.

4th place is a trophy now you know .

It depends what you are actually expecting I guess. The poor showings in recent years in cup competitions is understandably frustrating.

It's a sad fact of modern football that a lot of fans would rather get 4th place than win the FA or League Cups.

I think Wenger has to except that its MUCH harder to snatch up TOP talents on the cheap these days.

If your going to sell the likes of Fabregas, Nasri, Henry, Song, RVP etc.. you have to either:

    1. Have a TOP quality young talent ready to replace them.
(Like was the case with Vieira/Fabregas)

    or

    2. Be prepared to spend the transfer money on a suitable TOP quality replacement.

Squillaci, Chamakh, Gervinho, Santos are not the quality of signing we used to get at this Club - these are all recent examples of Wenger trying to get a bargain and failing.. Wenger has to spend if he wants to compete.
(Im not saying we should abandon our youth policy by any means, just that if there's a gap in the squad it must be filled with quality.)

It is indeed , but at the end of a game where you have triumphed over all the others in the competition ....you cant carry 4th place and your end of year accounts around the pitch in a lap of honour.

If that is the case why do some players susposedly say that they will only play for club who are in the C.L.

If the team you play for finishes 4th then you get the chance to play in the C.L.
You don't if your team wins the FA or League Cup.
It's funny how many opposing fans mock Liverpool for only playing in the Europa League this season whilst conveniently forgetting they won a trophy to be able to participate in the Europa League.
Personally i'd take winning a trophy over participation in the C.L. anyday

then we are singing off the same hymn sheet , finishing 4th would be ok if we won something else too.

Finishing 4th on its own is no measure of success.

    Not for the fans.

    for the money men maybe.

But it dont look good in the history books .
    It looks like failure.

How would you feel about winning the FA or League Cup but finishing 5th ?

Happy as larry . for a team to develop a winning mentality , you have to , at some point , start winning.

    Anything.

The F A cup would be a great start .

    Interesting debate.
The sad truth is that we've lost top players in recent seasons because our ambitions do not match theirs and their salary expectations exceed our policy, take champions lge football away and there really is little to attract players to the club who will improve the team, so in simple terms lifting a pot to satisfy fans could easily send the club backwards further.

Liverpool are linked with every top player in the market but have really only managed to sign one in the last 3 years and he came with baggage which may explain why others did not take a punt on him, I don't see it purely as coincidence that they can't get a real difference maker to the club and their inability to qualify for the champions lge.

We're all entitled to opinions of course but I would have to say that finishing 4th is in the best interests of the club, what the club charge us at the turnstiles is a completely different argument....

It would have to be matched with a marked increase in investment in the squad, though even then it would guarantee anything.

CL qualification is very important in my opinion. Participation in this tournament is also very important to top players considering a move to the Premiership. However, qualification should be used as a springboard to success, not seen as success in itself. We don't buy top players even though we've been in the CL for the past 15 seasons, so the "attracting top talent" argument doesn't really apply to us because for whatever reason we won't pay the money needed.
