Hello and welcome to the official match thread for Sunday’s F.A Cup third round encounter between Mansfield Town & Liverpool. The game is scheduled to be played at the One Call Stadium on Sunday 6th January 2013 with a kick-off time of 4PM. ESPN will be showing the game & both BBC Radio Five Live & talkSPORT have the radio rights to the game.

    Preview.

The F.A Cup enters the third round at the weekend and on Sunday, Liverpool travel to the One Call Stadium to take on Mansfield Town of the Blue Square Bet Premier. There are 32 games taking place over this weekend and we will be focusing on the second game on Sunday.

Mansfield Town will host Liverpool with both sides looking to reach the fourth round of this year’s competition. Both sides will go into the encounter on the back of good recent form and will go into the game hoping that they can impress in front of the T.V cameras.

Mansfield Town have already battled through three F.A Cup ties this season and Sunday’s game will be their fourth. They began their 2012/2013 F.A Cup campaign at the fourth qualifying round stage and were drawn to face Workington AFC of the Conference North.

Workington put up a good fight and worked hard throughout the game but a double from Mansfield striker Jake Speight put the Conference promotion challengers in charge and a late goal from Gareth Arnison wasn’t enough for Workington and Mansfield progressed to the first round of the F.A Cup.

The ‘Stags’ were then drawn against Southern Football League Division One side Slough Town. It was once again a difficult tie for Mansfield with the first game finishing 0-0 at the One Call Stadium. It was therefore taken to a reply. Mansfield were against frustrated in the replay and the game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. No breakthrough was made in extra-time and the game eventually went to penalties.

Mansfield Town were able to get through the penalty shoot-out and prevailed by four goals to one. The second round draw of the F.A Cup drew Mansfield Town together with fellow Conference side Lincoln City.

This tie was once again a close one with many chances and goals. Mansfield took the lead in the 21st minute before Lincoln recovered and took a 2-1 lead with goals just before and just after half-time. Mansfield then got it back to 2-2 before Lincoln retook the lead midway through the second half. It stayed 3-2 to Lincoln until the 92nd minute.

Matt Rhead scored the dramatic last-minute equaliser which got Mansfield the 3-3 draw and secured a replay at the One Call Stadium. They triumphed 2-1 in the replay which secured a third round tie with Liverpool.

Their recent league form has been good as well. In their last six league games, Mansfield Town have won four, drawn once and have lost just once. That run of form has propelled them to 9th in the Blue Square Bet Premier table and they are just six points off Kidderminster Harriers who occupy 6th place.

The away side, Liverpool, will begin their F.A Cup campaign tomorrow. As I’m sure many of you are already aware, Premier League sides join the F.A Cup at the third round stage and this is therefore Liverpool’s first game in this season’s F.A Cup. They will be looking to replicate their F.A Cup run from last season where they beat Oldham Athletic, Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Stoke City & Everton to reach the final before being defeated by Chelsea.

Liverpool’s recent league form has also been good. Liverpool have won four and lost two of their last six league games. This has moved them up the Premier League table into 8th and they will be hoping to kick on in the league.

Liverpool’s last two games have been good and shows signs that Liverpool may be finding the consistency that they need. They have travelled to West London to take on Q.P.R & hosted Sunderland in their last two games. Both games have been comprehensively won by Liverpool with the final score being 3-0 on both occasions. These results have been very important for Liverpool with a run of difficult games coming up.

Those two results will give Liverpool confidence going into tomorrow’s game and Brenda Rodgers will be hoping that whatever side he picks can exert the same level of pressure and quality in tomorrow’s game in the hope that Liverpool can secure their place in the fourth round draw.

If Mansfield are to produce a ‘Cupset’, they will need their attacking players to be on form. It seems likely that Matt Green will start upfront for the ‘Stags’ and his attacking prowess will be crucial for Mansfield Town.

The striker has been excellent for Mansfield since signing for the Conference side in the summer of 2011.

Last season, he was excellent throughout the long Conference season and bagged 29 goals in just 45 league games. He has been in decent form this season as well with eight goals in 22 games and he is the focal point of the Mansfield attack. He will be partnered up front in a 4-4-2 formation but it is difficult to predict who will join Green in attack.

They also have the option of calling upon Jake Speight. The striker returned to Mansfield in the summer two years after leaving for Bradford City. He was at promotion chasers Wrexham last season and scored 21 goals in 43 games for the Welsh side. He secured a move back to Mansfield in the summer and is currently Mansfield's joint top-scorer with eight goals alongside Matt Green.

If those attacking options don't work, Paul Cox has the option of Matt Rhead. The 28 year-old certainly brings a different aspect to the Mansfield side with his height and strength being assets which are different to what Green, Hutchinson & Speight possess.

Another key player for Mansfield will be the centre-back Exodus Geohaghon. The much travelled defender will be looking to keep the Liverpool attack quiet and his 6ft 5in frame means he can win a large amount in the air so Liverpool will be looking to keep it on the deck.

His long throws can also be an important asset for Mansfield as he can get the ball into the box for the likes of Matt Rhead to exploit.

The away side, Liverpool, are expected to make changes. The likes of Daniel Agger, Steven Gerrard & Luis Suarez are all expected to be rested in preparation for the league game against Manchester United next Sunday.

Some of Liverpool’s fringe players are expected to get some minutes with players such as Jamie Carragher, Sebastian Coates & Jack Robinson all expected to get starts in the Liverpool defence.

Another player who is expected to get a start for Liverpool is Nuri Şahin. The midfielder, on loan from Real Madrid, hasn’t been able to get in the starting line-up on a regular basis and tomorrow’s game could be an opportunity for Şahin to get some minutes and find some of the form he showed earlier in the season.

In attack, Daniel Sturridge seems likely to get his first minutes in a Liverpool shirt but Brendan Rodgers has said that Sturridge is still regaining his fitness after an injury he picked up when he was with Chelsea so it would be likely that that Sturridge will come off the bench at some point during the second half.

This could see Luis Suarez start but Rodgers may want to rest the striker in preparation for the league game against Manchester United next Sunday. It's certainly a dilemma for the Liverpool manager.

So, an intriguing game in prospect! Will Mansfield be able produce one of the biggest ‘Cupsets’ in recent years? Or will Liverpool end Mansfield’s cup run?

Great thread as per usual Chris.

No idea how Mansfield play, nor any idea about their manager and players. What I do know is.. They have a fit chief executive!

    Random fact:

Mansfield has more super markets than any other town in the UK. It has three large Tesco's, one Very large ASDA, a large Sainsbury's and various budget super markets, including Aldi.

Here's another random fact...my dads best mate is a Mansfield fan <ok>

Good thread Chris. FA Cup games always have the potential for a slip up and Mansfield are doing well this season but I'll still be fuming if we **** this one up <laugh>

Score early and it could be a cricket score but if not it could be squeeky bum time.

Hope Sturridge starts and scores to get going. However, some good performances are usually followed by a crap one, just hope it isn't utd next week. Cup upset for me, they will hold out for a draw and replay.

  11. Its false advertisement. She wears concrete on her face and isn't anywhere near as nice close up. Anyone that saw her on TV in Stags last round game against Lincoln will have noticed <ok>

  12. Also two Morrisons. Three B&Qs too <ok>

  13. Town centres been dead for years. I guarantee there will be footage of boarded up shops etc prior to kickoff, they will make the town look a lot worse than it is too. It happened when Stags played Newcastle (twice) and Boro!
