that is a perfectly valid point and something that has me worried a bit to be honest. wonder who Rodgers would have gone for if he had the funds Kenny had, as Rodgers to my knowledge has not attracted a big name player, fair enough he was Swansea manager and not an attractive club to a lot of players, but we would need him to identify the players and hope the pull of the club is enough, but is Rodgers capable of that? or the board as well, in cutting the wage bill down, are they savy enough to see the value in him. time will tell, and i hope he does.
I think Rodgers is capable of bringing the right players in. Not convinced we got much dough to play with.
Its not about CL so much. Its about making intelligent signings. Look at Everton who have slowly built their squad in bringing in good players even though they do not have much money. Same with Newcastle (I know they are struggling at the minute but they have a really strong first XI when they have everyone is fit)
I think its a false path, chasing "big name" players. We need to raise the whole team gradually at the same time. Otherwise you end up with a team built around one or two that when injured or leave destroy any progress. See Arsenal, and to an extent us over the years. One player can only contribute one players amount of world class a match and over a season its just not enough. Eventually if everything is done right then "big name" players are created at your club not bought. Don't get me wrong nobody can argue that a buy like RVP isn't a perfect example of going and getting a big name player but United are buying them to maintain a championship quality side not create it. Its natural progression, your players end up on 100k+ because they've earned it through bringing your club success not paid in an attempt to bring that success (unless you have an unlimited supply of money). Eventually like with Barca or choke United, other teams world class players will want to come to you as a team of equals not as an ego stroke. Maybe an old fashioned view but it pans out with any team that has limited funds.
see your point of view Frank, and to be honest i do agree with it, as will most, if not all. build slowly and have everyone going forward as one, rather than chopping and changing and have consistency is something we all look forward to WHEN it happens, but the other side is like i said we could have the potential for so much more now, it just seems a waste, arent we suppose to be able to compete with anyone in the market according to our owners, like to see them put their money where their mouth is IF we did get top 4. we dont know what is going on at the club though, so could be we have what we think we need already, or there is some serious business going on we don't know about, just seems a shame that your theory is probably a 2-3 yr time plan to challenge top 4, if we tried i reckon we could get it now and build from there would be a lot easier.
I think when they say compete with anyone inhe transfer market - it doesn't include City/Chelsea and possibly United though. We can compete in the way that if we need to go and spend £15mil on a player we can, but we can't do it for 3 or 4 in the same window and pay £100k wages to them all.
Looks like Spurs will wrap up Sneijder at some point. Not sure who our remaining targets really are. I would have to go with Ince and Gameiro in terms of the constant stories.
Cos Spurs need more midfielders? Bale, Lennon, Parker, Dembele, Siggurdson, Dempsey, Livermore, Sandro, Holtby (from next season). Does make you wonder why they bothered to sgn Dempsey & Siggurdson? Just because we were interested? Starting to sound like Man City/Chelsea a few years ago, buy the best players from the previous year so no one else can have them.
I think the sneijder rumors are true ( he was left out of the squad today btw), and I think he will have talked to RVD about Tottenham. But like you said with Holtby coming in you are starting to build a big squad but is it too many? Sigurdson doesn't play, but will Dembele, who is quality, be dropped? It is known that Sneijder needs to play that AM role and does not really have lots of flexibility.
Hasn't he bene left out of the squad for the last few weeks because of this dispute? Will be interesting to see where he does go as 2 years ago he was one of the best midfielders in the world and could have gone pretty much anywhere he wanted. Just wonder if things carry on whether BR might make a move for Sigurdson in the summer if he's still not playing for Spurs. Can't see him wanting to continually sit on their bench.
Sneijder not that special really. He's had more poor seasons than good ones, he doesn't score enough goals or get enough assists for an attacking midfielder and he's pretty injury prone. Add on the fact that he'd want a MASSIVE contract then its not such a good deal. Hope Spurs sign him.
Well **** sigurdson, you wanted that extra cash, get what you deserve! If you wanted to play you knew you have started almost every game in the AM role. His loss.
Should have gone to Swansea. At least they have Michu, was that instead? He doesn't seem like a one season wonder as he was the top scoring midfielder in La Liga last season, not bad considering he played for an average/poor team.
That just about sums up you view. No offence but if we are to stick to what you say, it could probably take about another 2-3 seasons just to get to top 4 or even more maybe, depending on how long it's going to take for the youngsters to kick in. Hasn't it been 3 season already now, we can't afford to lose anymore. Besides isn't our situation pretty much what you mentioned, 'depending on one star player' in Suarez. What we could do instead is to bring in more quality, and reduce the pressure off him and raise our overall game. It would be madness to ignore top talent if they available, in the hope of seeing youngsters coming out good in the future. It took more than a season and half for Henderson and Downing to alteast perform to a decent level. where as a certain 'Mata' has been performing from day 1. reason being he was one of those 'established' stars as you call it. By sticking to your view, it could do more harm than good to this club. Liverpool is a global brand, followed by millions around the world, and they are an important part for the success of this club. But they wouldn't be sticking around a club that's languishing in mid table. There is a reason why we have such a vast following compared say the likes of stoke or villa, because we have always been in top echelons of the PL. We need to show some intent, And singing top players is one way of showing we are still ambitious.
Holtby is young and could be on the bench at first. He can also play wide. At past clubs AVB has not tended to play wingers on both sides so he could come in for Lennon. Livermore will apparently leave them. Parker isnt getting any younger. Maybe Sigurdsson is not in AVB's plans. ----------------Friedel---------------------- -Walker--Dawson--Vertonghen--A.Ekotto-- ----------Sandro----Dembele--------------- ---------------Sneijder---------------------- ------Holtby------------------Bale----------- ----------------??????----------------------- AVB wants the title.
All fair points mate but indicative of the "I want it now" high risk transfer gambling that if it goes wrong ends up in a Leeds or Newcastle. I already expected it to be 2-3 seasons before we are that competitive year in year out AND stable as a squad. Constantly whining about 20 years without league is what keeps us rushing things, putting the pressure on negatively & ultimately failing. Year 1 should mean year 1. You cant lump failed years previous on to Rodgers tenure. Youngsters should be used and developed at the sharp end otherwise the academy is worth nothing. You can sit and name a dozen players who've made it that we didn't buy. You're conveniently forgetting the teams that bought them spent 100's of millions buying a lot of players in the same position that didn't work and sucking up 50k+ a week. They can afford those mistakes: depending on how you view of KD's gambles and what kitty we were left with as a result this year we; most certainly can not. Selective memory is the sign of a bad gambler. We ARE a global brand but most important to remember, it still doesn't give us the the transfer kitty the current top 3 have. Our gate receipts aren't theirs no matter how many mugs we sell in China. That was my point; we have relied on one or two players. Each time they've left signalled a step backwards that more stable & successful teams absorb without going years not winning the league. Arsenal and us become uncompetitive as soon as those players go. I'm not talking about never buying a world class player (see RVP comment). I'm saying it can't be the foundations of our plan because its highly unstable. As every transfer window shows, 20 "class acts" get bandied about everytime. We only remember the 5 that go on to be great that we didn't buy. Not the 15 that were just ok or failures. Its about balance. Develop the youth, have a scouting team that can try & find the players just before they become a name. And yes if available and if he fits the plan and paying for him doesn't mean we suffer weakness in another area that will negate his contribution over a season then yes buy him! But you don't just buy him because he's a "name" and hope it all works out: that's FIFA 2013 mentality. I've said on another thread we shouldn't be conservative on price or salary with "in case it doesn't work" in mind. If the player is right & available and within club budget get him! So mate my way might lead to a few years more lower than we like and yes if fecked up could turn us into mid table for a long time. Yes being out of CL is damaging to our rep with new potential fans & plastics. Its why FSG is doing things like that silly TV show to keep our profile up while we wait. IMO that is still Better than immature short termism "him now give us a miracle whatever the price!" that could see us Broke again or as a Blackburn or Leeds.
Apparently Isco is going to be a Chelsea player soon or in the summer for 15 million. If true, ****, sometimes the "now" have it good.
Greedy career ruining move if true. Mata, Hazard, Oscar, De Bruyne, Marin, Moses, Piazon. (also Beneyoun and Malouda still).
