Is anyone on here involved in the proposed new cruise ship terminal in the city centre?

Here's a rather useless artist impression of the new terminal...

    This is from 2010:

CRUISE ships could berth on the River Humber under ambitious proposals to build a dedicated passenger terminal in central Hull.

A study into the feasibility of constructing a cruise terminal in the city found the idea was not only a possibility but would bring millions of pounds to the area's economy.

Following a series of technical studies, officials say Hull is capable of hosting the largest cruise ships in operation today - up to 1,112ft (360 metres) in length.
They could safely navigate the Humber and berth on the estuary, using a new terminal in the vicinity of Riverside Quay, at the city's Albert Dock.

According to the study, the economic benefit to Hull from vessels calling at the new facility could be as much as £14.3m in cruise tourism and the terminal would provide a welcome boost to the city's employment levels with the creation of up to 263 jobs. The report estimated that a terminal could cost from between £10m to £20m.

For those that don't know, Albert Dock(above) is the dock behind the Odeon and Ice Arena, that runs up to the back of the Lord Line building and used to be home to our fishing fleet. It seems the plan has been resurrected, due the major increase in cruise passengers and would run cruises to the fjords of Norway. The new estimated cost is £25m and it could potentially also include a hotel, conference centre or music venue.

I think this could potentially be the biggest thing to happen to the city in years, due to the site of the dock, the cruise ships would be visible to everyone as they arrived in Hull, from well before St Andrews Quay, all the way to the Smith and Nephew flyover.

Remember these? Jazz cruises on a Sunday in the summer; bar open all day, so you could get a return to New Holland and stay on board, drinking all day.......

And they removed them, cos the Humber Bridge had to 'run at a profit'!

I agree OLM, I've always thought we have been in a prime position to have more influence on waterways. Really we've only ever had P&O and thats from the east of the City. Really, all of the sites near Odeon, St.Andrews Quay are just wasteland and I always find it rather embarrassing driving into the city centre with an industrial estate on the left, wasteland on the right. Also, the uni campus which is expected where Lord Line is seems good, and hopefully we can get things such as 'The Boom' back on track. Also, does anyone know if any progress is going on at 'the Beacon' where KFC and Costa is near ASDA?

This as well as Siemens would be great for the city.

Well they could build the dock for the biggest cruise ships in the world, Oasis & Allure of the seas, but there'd be no point as the places that cruise ships go to on the Northern run would need a lot of work doing on them for either of those 2 to fit. Most of the ships that come up to do the Northern Europe run are smaller, almost 70m shorter & carry 50% less passengers & almost 1/3 of the crew.
Still a good idea & maybe there could be bigger ships too, the next size up, but the bigger ships go where the money is, Carribean & Asia.

It is a great idea. The newest market from the UK is firmly aimed at Scandinavia. One or two ships per week would generate a real boost for the city. But you could not handle more than one ship at a time. Southampton now has 5 terminals. It is reaching capacity in the infrastructure and hotel accommodation. When we have 6 ships in the traffic is impossible. Money wise the sums spent are staggering. If you got 20 sailing per season it would mean 100,000 passengers. It would also mean that there would be a real need for more hotels.

The average cruise ship has over 2500 passengers.

Quite a bit of difference between the ferries & a cruise ship, yes you still feel it but if its that bad they will use stabilisers.

Theres a growing market for Baltic/Scandinavian cruises we need to tap in to, massive benefits for the city, people don't realise we already benefit from NSF's, there was a row of Dutch blokes behind me at the Leeds game over from our twin city Rotterdam, really need to get that friendly with Feyenoord back on the agenda.

Ellerman Wilson line used to do cruises into the Baltic and up the Norway coast 50 years ago, these were part cargo part passenger ship. So the location for cruises to that area is ideal.

once humberside's finest discover there might be continentals coming to watch the great hull city, they'll close all the pubs and shops, stop the ships off spurn, and escort them to whitby.

after dressing up as 20th century gladiators and getting their quadruple overtime, thereby admitting the ineptitude of their people-handing skills, that is.

St Andrews dock was the home of our fishing fleet.

FANTASTIC idea, as said above the site of the cruise ships docked here would be amazing.

I remember going on holiday to Florida and driving down the coast we passed Cape Canaveral and there was about 5 docked there, including the huge Disney Cruise ship, it was great to see so it'd be just the same here!

IF this came through it could also see investment into Humberside Airport especially for the cruiseliners who will have passengers flying in from over the UK and abroad to go on the cruise.
Brilliant idea, lets hope it comes off

The port could be expanded to hold more than one ship at a time over the years, and ships could alternate days to dock at the port meaning there would only be one at a time, but different ones throughout the week...cruises could still go to the Caribbean etc but go around the UK possibly still docking in areas such as Southampton/Scotland, then there could be cruises down to Spain etc, Iceland and Scandanavia....there are many different possibilities really.

Plans for Hockney exhibition nearby too! A great idea to bring money into Hull (unlike crap developments like St Stephens which take money out of Hull).

Surely St Stephens has brought money into Hull since its directly in the City Centre and attracted names we wouldn't usually?

Plus its nice for visitors to see when they step off the train

I do hope it happens of course I do but it gets a little tiresome when all these grand scheme's for the City of Hull never come to fruition. To name a few, the Edwin Davis store to be replaced by an 18 story block of apartments, Princes Quay 2, the Monorail or trams, and what of the previous idea for the old fish dock area: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ktidbsJYUg Humber Bridge lit up 24/7 ???, Castle Street :( ........ casino and hotel next to the KC with massive improvements to Anlaby Road ??? .......... oh I could go on but you get the drift.

Remember we were promising to be a 'top ten city' not long ago. it's never been quantified but I would suggest that we have dropped a long way down the ladder since this initiative was announced. the last bg idea i think. with an attitude that pisses off realistic private investment (ie Allams for instance), what chance of Hull City Council breaking from the Trinity to make this idea happen. Great headlines but perhaps just another soundbite for the dockers, hull telephones staff, civil servants and other council employees that live in the world of the council.

is there another election around the corner?

Some plans have been a little far fetched and i think we all knew they wouldnt actually happen because of the economy
