We have a 35 year old keeper in Davis and a nutter in Boruc who is ony short term, so at some point, another keeper would be signed anyway.

I don't see Butland as the answer. In fact, I rate Gazzaniga higher than him and see him as a player with more potential. We need a keeper with experience that has good decision-making abilities and is reliable.

Yeah a fella in his prime about 26-31 so gazza can play cup games and then when he (the new 'keeper) starts to decline gazza will be hitting his prime and take over. Butland would stifle Gazza or Gazza would stifle butland if you ask me.

    Alan Nixon on Jack Butland:

"Think reality is that Southampton have the money and the interest to do it now. Liverpool and Everton only have the interest."

"There is a Southampton interest. But there is NO deal as we speak. Pass that on."

We'll have to agree to disagree on that. Dont get me wrong I'm not saying hes not a very good player just a combination of injury and settling means he hasn't quite reached his peak yet. Hes been excellent for us this season its just my opinion that Lallana in particular is a greater miss for us. I think ramirez is a better quality player but Lallana has been here so long and is so integrated that when hes out its hard for the team to cope and I dont really feel the same about ramirez YET! Of course he has been excellent on a number of occasions and would be a massive loss and if we can get him fully integrated and with a good strectch of games then I will probably agree that he will be our most important player.

Well from what I've heard, I wouldn't expect anything in the first week or so.

But then I won't get any updates till Saturday night.

I'd be happy with Butland, he might be on a steep learning curve but he looked good under considerable pressure at the Olympics and is highly thought of in the England setup too. He's going to be a premier league keeper in future, with us or not.

Think Butland is seriously over hyped.

From L2 to Olympics on the space of what, a game....in my opinion because he is simply 'under 20' and has 'potential'...

    Overrated.

Gazza 'went' straight from L2 to the 'Prem', and he's 'foreign', so 'even' worse! (just following the routine of putting quotes in seemingly unnecessary places)

I do have to ask, though, why is playing someone because of their age and potential a bad thing in your eyes?

    I think Gazzaniga is good.

He's had a tough start but he is learning quickly.

There is no need for us to sign Butland when we have Gazzaniga coming through ad being a part of the team.

If we had the opportunity to sign Messi would you say we don't need him because we've got Mayuka?

Obviously he's not that good, but if the club has identified him as a target there's a reason for that.

It's different in goal, though - ain't it? I mean... there's only one goalkeeper per team...

Butland will probably be good in the future. Its a mistake to think he is our goalkeeper solution for this season. If we sign him we will need to sign a 1st choice keeper for this season too. Giving us 5 keepers.

I see no sense in having gazza and butland.

Exactly right. Ramirez WILL be our best player but at the moment Lallana IS our best player. Ramirez is not quite playing at his best yet, Lallana is performing at 100% every game and we struggle without him. Adkins also knows this. He is not scared to leave out Ramirez or Lambert for certain games but if fit Lallana is on the pitch.

Ramirez is showing glimpses of how good he is and let's hope that he keeps improving as quickly as he is because the moments when he 'sees passes that our other players didn't' need to be to someone and not to a space where someone might have run into :)

On Butland.....No thanks, we have a 'future keeper' already. 2 if you count the other young 'un. We need a top level keeper for at least this season. Maybe Friedel on loan? Otherwise I would stick with Boruc till the end of the season.

Astori sounds a good prospect though. Would like him.

Lallana is undoubtedly hugely influential, yet If you look back at our last few games, his first instinct is to see if he can drive at goal or put someone in on goal. Adam is awesome, but that is not always his first instinct. I have no criticism of Adam at all and yes, he is hugely missed; having watched Ramirez since he joined and Adam for years, I still stand by what I said. Adam has been more consistent but Gaston more direct.

Just because one player IS playing at 100%, doesn't mean he is being more direct. I also reiterate that form and performance is different to ability. Both are hugely talented, I just believe that Ramirez has greater ability, albeit a close call.

And if our forward players start making the necessary moves at the opportune moment, the results could be fairly spectacular. When healthy, we have two wide players with an eye for goal...I'd like to see both of them start making diagonal runs into the box with some frequency, because it frequently looks as if Gaston is searching for that decisive pass, with no one to send it to.

aha I think we actually pretty much agree I think I misunderstood your first post. The question is should/can we build the team around gaston. The way he plays remids me of how barca do always looking for that killer through ball and its bloody fantastic to watch! The problem is you need people running in behind and making those runs. If we can get on that wavelength then we really could be something but perhaps thats harder said than done?
