Vincelot didn't prove to be any better than what we already had, just an extra option in the middle of the park. If for some strange reason the Wright deal doesn't go ahead then I would like MA to play Jackman back in the middle rather than a new signing. Also I think anyone would struggle to argue that Jackman is probably one of our most creative midfielders alongside Whelps & Lee.
Maybe he normally is, but he was absolutly dire today when he came on. Probably due to the fact he hasn't played much, but he won't get back in anyway if he can't hit the ground running.
i agree he wasnt great but he came on at a point when we were being hounded by southend and as a result he was often given the ball with his back to goal and the big bald number 6(?) breathing down his neck already.
This is an example of...you can't please everybody. Imagine if Scally's directive was "get out of div 2 at any cost"..........would you faff around with the team that, although brilliant until early November, has been stutteringly inconsistent of late. The defence has been leaking a few goals of late...notably Plymouth, Fleetwood, Barnet and Exeter. How many does it take to stop the rot or let Gills become an 8th place team again. Sentiment really does not have much of a place nowadays and in football like so many other professions nowadays, you are only as good as your last result. Tough on one or two of the players, but if a forward who had not been scoring (or a back not defending) and was kept in the team because his surname was Allen there would be absolute hell to pay........no different here Im afraid. You either want promotion or you're prepared to chance it on what you currently have. IMHO MA is doing the right thing here. It was the same when Asaba, Taylor, Shaw, Akinbiyi, Butters et al we brought in those years ago. I accept that all change IS NOT improvement, but all improvement IS change. COYG and let's push on with not only promotion, but a sniff of being Champions......a long time since 1964.
But if we already have some of those players at our disposal who can already make the difference, why go out and waste money by getting in more players? If the players can improve the team then yeah ok fair enough, but its hardly a sentimental reason to want Jackman to play in midfield. He was our standout player last year in team that at many times made it hard to stand out at all.
MA is only looking to bring players in to improve the team, certainly in his eyes anyways. it is clear that some players arent favoured by him as they were by other managers and fans alike. this is football, someones star player doesnt fit with someone elses system or style of play. yes MA inherited a great squad and his additions thus far have all been good, but this still isnt "his" squad! and it wont be for 2 seasons or so if he is given the chance to stay that long. its happening all over the place atm with team that have a manager change, look at liverpool, sterling and suso starting regularly for rogers where they were no where to be seen in the previous year, yes they are a little older etc but you'd have thought they'd be on the fringes of the squad the season before
You are dead right pegleg. Any money spent now reduces the ability to recruit league 1 standard of players in the Summer and if a bit of sense went into selection policy the existing squad would cruise to promotion. The latest bizarre declaration from MA is contained in his aftermatch comments where he waxes lyrical about having found a great new striker in Birchall. Perhaps eventually it will occur to him that Birchall has been kicking his heels for 6 months and that Kedwell and Birchall were recruited as a pairing and it might be worth giving them a chance. Surely acquiring new players should be a last resort not a starting position. So far as Jackman is concerned he should have been playing the first half dozen games because he has earned that from last season. If he had lost his ability then it is fine to drop him after getting a run but you cannot judge the guy on occasional appearances or coming off the subs bench.
I agree in reference to transfer fees on players in this window, however I feel it is vital we get at least 1 if not 2 more faces in on loan. Granted our squad is good now, however prior to yesterday we haven't played well in 2 months, Legge comes in and it rejuvinates people, they start fighting for their place, and in comparison to other recent seasons we have been extremely lucky with injuries thus far, that could easily change leaving us short. Our promotion rivals will no doubt be improving their squads, and we have no greater strenght in depth then Vale, Southend, Cheltenham and Rotherham therefore we should be looking to do likewise. Personally, I would like to see a midfielder come in who ideally can play in a number of positions but holding mid would be good, I though Jack Payne was outstanding yesterday and flourishes in a more forward position, so someone behind him works. A striker always rejuvinates a squad, especially if they come in and grab 4 or 5 goals in the first couple of months, yesterday proved that Myles is so much more dangerous on the left wing and I'd love it if Allen utilised him there more often as opposed to up top where he often finds himself with his back to goal, his abilities cause havoc when he is facing goal from a deeper position and putting defenders on the back foot, not holding it up and flicking on. Birchall did well yesterday, their centre halfs didnt get a seconds rest in the first half because of him and with a few more weeks playing with Burton he will start to read his lay-offs and flicks.
Bristol.......MA is recruiting League One players now and not leaving it until the summer and this is a positive move. The last time I checked, Brentford were in League One. Leave it too late and they'll be gone. And if you read my post I have only referred to it being tough on one or two players. Preparation now saves repairs later...............
Danny spiller just tweeted that " OMG massive treat for you fills fans this week #goingup " does that mean a new signing
He always tweeted after something with #goalscorer either he is on a wind up or he knows we are about to sign a goalscorer probably someone who is a ex player as I feel he knows who they are.
Just want to add that it may be McDonald joining but not Cody, it could be Charlie McDonald as Martin Allen would know him.
Could very much be bayo seeing how many goals he has scored this year could justify the #goalmachine hashtag Actually re-reading all the tweets I'm pretty sure it will be Cody instead.
Frank Nouble is also another one it could be. I think it is between Cody McDonald, Bayo, Charlie MacDonald and Frank Nouble however you never know it could be someone else.
I don't really think the MacDonald thing will happen as the tweets from Richards and Spiller both imply that the new player will be a returning Gills player who we all already love. Only really Bayo and Cody fall into that category to me.
I don't know how to copy this over properly from Twitter but Monty dog says this Monty Allen ‏@MontyAllenMD Papa is looking at nabbing a bargain in this window. Anglian Windows have got a sale on! To me that means Simeon, or Chris Martin, but I think its probably the former as the other Tweets seem to indicate a former player.
