STEVE BRUCE insists he will not make a decision on Sulley Muntari’s future until the end of the season – but admits the Ghanaian’s last-gasp winner at Bolton would have done his cause no harm.

On-loan Inter Milan midfielder Muntari struck deep into injury-time to give Sunderland only their second win since January, after Bolo Zenden’s first-half opener was cancelled out by Ivan Klasnic three minutes from time.

Muntari has not lived up to expectations since joining Sunderland in January, but Bruce says a lack of match action in Italy was to blame.

“There’s a permanent deal in place, but nothing has been finalised as yet,” said Bruce.

“We’ll make a decision at the end of the season.

“We all know he is a very decent footballer.

“The problem that Sulley has had is that, when he arrived, he hadn’t really played for six months.

“He won the Champions League with Inter last summer, but then there was a change of manager there and he wasn’t in the team after that.

“He hadn’t played for six months and he’s just now getting the kind of fitness levels you need to play in the Premier League.”

IMO we have seen nothing realy compared to what the lad is capable of due to lack of fitness, with a pre-season under his belt I think he could be a massive player for us next season if he signs, you don't play for the likes of Inter Milan if you aint a decent player

    posted this before,

In August 2009, his manager Jose Mourinho again found himself causing controversy after commenting that Muntari, a practising muslim, was lacking fitness and energy due to fasting during the month of Ramadan. He was reported to have said 'Muntari had some problems related to Ramadan, perhaps with this heat it's not good for him to be doing this (fasting). Ramadan has not arrived at the ideal moment for a player to play a football match.'.[23]

However, since these comments many Muslims and non-Muslims have come out in defence of Mourinho saying that no offense was meant towards the player, but while the manager could have been more tactful in his treatment of the issue it stands to reason that a lack of food and water will affect a player's stamina and energy level.

just so happens that ramadam this year is august, just in time for pre-season and season start.

but poolie states that you don't play for inter if your not a decent player? that's why they are trying to offload him, even on loan....

Apart from the odd flash he has done nothing to suggest he deserves the wages he is demanding.
Now if he can take £300 a week i say sign him.

It could work in our favour, I personally think he is a good player he proved that playing for Ghana, he got thrown in at the deep end with us during a bad run and an injury crisis. a pre season and time to get to know his team mates better could mean we get a very good player cut price. We certainly now at least have some room to negotiate.

Played okay yesterday and that is all he has done for 3 or so months not good enough in my opinion has shown nothing to warrant a permanent deal. Yes he is an Inter player doesn't make him a good player, he was average at Pompey to say the least and was bought on the back of a couple of good performances and a few very good goals. The money would be better spent elsewhere we saw what he is capable of during the Fulham game i.e. very little and very stroppy not for us send him back.

very very good player but like bruce says, he hasn't played much in 6 months and it's showed unfortunately but made a great run beyond the defence for the 2nd goal yesterday, i liked his celebration even if it wasn't going in

I remember back in January when we were linked with Muntari and Sess that alot of people on these boards were all like "I would rather have Muntari than Sess, don't know enough about him. Would be good if we got him, but i'm nae bothered if we don't, so long as we get Sulley"

Looking at the run in since January, it would be tough for anyone to come in to a club in trouble like we were/are and perform. Sess is only just starting to show what he's about and he was out for a month or two while trying to get a move away from the club. Muntari had 6 months out, and if you haven't played for 6 months, heading into the Premier League isn't going to be a piece of piss.

And for the people asking why is Inter trying to get rid of him, they did get a new manager in Rafa when Mourinho (who bought him) left, and then Rafa has since left Inter and been replaced by Leo. Both of these managers want to bring in their own players, to make their own team. Players get culled everytime a new manager comes into a club, our own have been no different. Doesn't mean being bought by one of the best managers in the world (mourinho) he is going to fit in with the play style of another.

    My thought anyway.

Can somebody please explain why we took him on loan if he was not fit and we were not going to be unable to get him fit by the end of the season (okay he did okay on Saturday…. But **** me if that’s all he can muster)?
Surely this period was for us to have a good look at him before we commit to taking him permanently?

    I've scratched my chin................ and I've scratched my head............ and I might be being cynical but all I can come up with is either;

    1) he's not up to it
    2) the manager and his coaching staff have not done their jobs right
    3) 1 & 2

I know lets give him another season……………

Being unfit is better than being injured... least his name can make it on the teamsheet...

end of the day he came unfit in JAN,

he was given every chance to play, even when ****, he was still still picked ahead of others?

he's a proffesional athlete, and it's now MAY, **** me how long does it take to regain fitness, (it's hardly like he was a cripple).

he's played how many games? and done **** all,

think many off you are riding on the back off his assist on sat.

he's ****e, send him back, but doubt inter want him..

make your mind up, the deal is done, but bruce doesn't know, doesn't know what?

if he wants him or not, if that's the case, surely the deal wouldn't be done...

I like Muntari and people who say he cannot be that good if Inter don't want him

Zanetti, Cambiasso, Sneijder, Mariga, Stankovic, Coutinho I could go on

are all above him in the pecking order and we aint in the same class as Inter

I say sign him, he will be a top player for us next year and will help attract better players to the SoL

He's an enigma Muntari; isn't he?

He looks as if he isn't fit and it must have been difficult to get to the point of being match fit. However, having said that, he doesn't look as if he's been trying to get in shape so that he can show what he's capable of. I think that's the gripe that most of us have with him.

He's a tremendously talented player; of that there's no doubt. Will we ever see that from him at SAFC? Who can say?

It's the "what if?" that's playing on my mind.

It'll be sods law that he's sent packing back to Inter, is then sold to ??????? and has a sensational season with his new club next season!

I know he's done next to nothing since his arrival and can be so frustrating to watch, but we have seen glimpses of what he can do in the Wigan game and last Saturday.

I think he is worth the risk, as long as the price is reasonable. I've heard £8m? too much for me, £6m max!
