I'm sorry but you can’t re-write history to suit your conscience. The airwaves of the local phone in's were red hot at the time with mags saying he had lost the plot; the dressing room and was too old to handle young modern footballers. It wasn't isolated and it wasn't just 0.5% of the fans either. I'm not saying it was the majority but certainly more like 50%. You may choose to remember it that way as the reality is extremely embarrassing for your fans after the massive outburst of public grief upon the news of his sad death. The fans didn't protest at all, or chant his name after he was sacked and indeed where quite happy to move on with Souness? Robson was forgotten and dismissed until news of his illness reappeared and then he was viewed with more sympathy.
This ^ is how the world of football saw it cest, my mates down south loathe newcastle because of exactly this! A disgracefull way to treat a knight of the realm
The vast majority of fans didn't want him sacked, and were appalled when he was. The treatment of him by Shepherd was disgraceful, but he sacked him, not the fans. I think you have a added a bit of poetic license to your post saying the phone lines were red hot with people complaining. Don't forget, your fans were not whiter than white during this time. Can you remember the disgusting songs your "fans" used to sing about him?
I was at a corporate do at Sid James during this tiime. I can tell you..all the Mags in the Box were bereating Robson and the fans in the stand were doing the same. so to say it was a small minority is way from the truth. To say it wasn't the fans who got him sacked is also a little naive. If those fans that I heard on that game and on other days were not so vocal..SBR would have lasted longer as manager and maybe pushed upstairs..that would have been the dignified way...but the fans got what they were shouting for.
I hardly missed a home game from 1972 to 2007, in 2004 when he went, I had a season ticket in the Leazes end. There may have been a few grumblings, but not major discontent as this thread suggests. We have different memories of this, certainly the fans were not shouting for him to be sacked.
Worked in an office at the time with 4 nufc season ticket holders! All agreed that he was 'going senile, lost the plot' etc! Couldnt believe my ears!
Looks like the OP has used Bobby's name to have a dig at the 'scum'. Piss poor approach and not worthy of further comment, especially when his exit was down to one individual. That is all.
Just utter bollocks. I was in the ground the one day he was booed and it was a very small few who were met with a raucous show of support. Came down to one thing and one thing only. Shepherd believing he'd lost control of the likes of Dyer, Bellamy etc. You could argue they were to blame but in reality Bobby just understood young players and the game. This was further evidenced by his replacement. The useless Souness being brought in as a disciplinarian (ignoring he was a ****e manager). Mackems have tried to re-write this history for years much to our amusement.
Funny! Start a thread on a sunderland forum to discuss an ipswich and england managerial legend and lose rep by the barcodes! You really are a bunch of cnuts!
so what you have to do is.. go onto your rep thingy me gig....get the latest..err, rep things..copy and paste.. name and shame,,,,, or else not give a ****...
I'm fireing the laptop up now, i couldnt really give 2 f#cks about rep, but it tells its own story i feel
