I've only been on here a short while and never seen this discussed.

I was born in sunderland but moved to lowestoft for daddy work reasons in 1980, saw ipswich win the uefa, began to watch them on a regular basis (but when they played us i would go in the away end with my uncle who used to always come down)
Then i/we followed him with england, unlucky! The closest yet!
Then came that brutal awfull treatment he got at the hands of the scum, imho he was building something brilliant there! And will be forever cursed!

Been discussed quite a bit, over the years (incl. the old BBC 606).

But it didn't make any sense then and it still doesn't now.

Met him in Durham at some charity do really nice bloke who loved footy top bloke in my book even when he was their manager. If they had kept him they would in my opinion be a very good side both here and in Europe, it wasn't to be.

SBR was different class to Fergie, a true gentleman - would he have "discussed" decisions with the officials during the game? Would he attack another manager? Would he say he have a go at the supporters of another club like Fergie did to us?

No he would not - I hope the statue gets erected - should be at Wembley never mind Sid James Park

The last true gentleman of football. Saw a few of the Ipswich games when at RAF Honington in 70s. Met him and his coach Bobby Ferguson (Shields lad) when they used the base facilities as there was no acadamies at that time.

Had a few more than heated discussions with NUFC supporters about his departure after four or so games into the season but the bleat was "it was his team" over and over again. The weeping and wailing when he dies was disgraceful.

Bobby Robson had started to lose his marbles and his authority by the time he was sacked, I think the end of his reign was inevitable. He was diagnosed with cancer again about a year after he was sacked, so may not have been well enough to manage much longer anyway. Still don't agree with the way it was done though, or the timing (no credible replacement=years of decline). Still very much loved and missed.

    I've read his autobiography

He loved being the manager of Newcastle. He had a loyalty to the north east before the nastiness took over, but was a tad more black and white than red and white.

The problem was that he was continually undermined by freddy shepherd and Alan oliver, and this led to the eventual bust up and departure.

As a Sunderland fan it was difficult back then. A chap I had respect for was doing a brilliant job, so it was great to see them destroying it from within by thinking that souness, klievert, Owen and other bell ends was a better choice

    Thank you

Agreed. There was a theory that discipline was getting out of hand at st James park so they wanted to bring in a firm hand as manager but keep moving forward. Look wherE that got them.

Also, anyone with sir bobbys book to hand should read about how fat freddy handled the approach from the FA. What a despicable Cnut

Had the pleasure of meeting him once, hand on heart, a pure Gentleman and loved football. Even though he knew i was a mackem, all he wanted to talk about was football.

As for the treatment he got at the hands of the scum, FICKLE bastards, showed their true colours then didn't they?

I had the honour of meeting him at Wembley in the 80s , and found him to be a real gentleman.
He spent a good 10 minutes outside the ground chatting with fans. He would talk to anybody as long as the subject was football.

I always remember when he sadly passed away, there wasn't one single txt joke doing the rounds as is the norm these days when famous people die. Not a single one. Quite amazing really.

That's how much he was loved and respected in this country by all football supporters. I was absolutely gutted when he died personally.

There's some ****e on this thread. Freddie Shepherd sacked him, to the disgust of 99.5% of the "fickle scum".

Welder, I normally have a great deal of time with your posts, that one is terrible.
