I don't pretend to be an expert in computers, but I do work for a company with global connections and below is a copy of what I was sent.

TWO SUBJECTS of which to be AWARE:

Just verified this with Snopes and it is REAL. ALSO WENT TO TRUTH OR
FICTION, IT'S on their site also.

    PLEASE INFORM EVERYONE you know!

1.) Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being sent. The
moment that you open these emails your computer will crash,

and you will not be able to fix it!

If you get an e-mail along the lines of 'Osama Bin Laden Captured' or
'Osama Hanged', don't open the Attachment!

This e-mail is being distributed throughout countries around the globe,
but mainly in the USA and Israel.

Be considerate & send this warning to whomever you know.

2.) You should be alert during the next few days:

Do not open any message with an attached file called 'Invitation'
    regardless of who sent it.

It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which 'burns' the whole hard
    disc C of your computer!

This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in
his/her contact list; that is why you should send this E-mail to all
    your contacts.

It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus
    and open it.

If you receive an e-mail called 'Invitation', _even though sent by a
    friend, do not open it!

_ This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever.

The virus was discovered by McAfee this past week. There is no repair
yet for this kind of virus..

The virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where other
    vital information is kept.

SEND THIS E-MAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!

I'd imagine it's possible to use HTML in the emails to embed some form of malware, I'm also pretty sure that there's been a way to get malware into a .jpg or other image files, which is why often email providers will disable images by default, until you mark the sender as trusted. However that email sounds like sensationalist bullshit:

"This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever."

    Wow. Snopes. Those virus specialists.

Load of bull. Also, you can fix it. You can remove any virus from any computer if you try hard enough.

It's went from saying 'open the E-mail' to 'open the attachment'.

What the ****? Oh and it's a hoax.

As Cal said, utter sensationalist bullshit which is trying to generate some hype.

Software can't destroy anything. Plus any modern OS's now prevent any software from doing anything to the boot sector like this. It was a problem 15 years ago, but not now.

So yeah, most of the E-mail is just sensationalist poop. However, the point made is a very good one none the less. Do not open any attachments or links in E-mails unless you know EXACTLY what they are.

Nope. There was a java vulnerability a short while ago but it's been patched. The jpg virus was also patched years ago. You're fine unless you use something like an original copy of XP which hasn't had any patches applied to it.

I'm all for people making others aware of the dangers of viruses and phishing emails in attachments and links. It's only ever a good thing.

However, I long for the day when E-mails like these no longer exist and I don't have to deal with friends and family asking me to make sure that a virtual Olympic torch won't burn their hard drive.
