I guess my ideal January would be a GK, a CB, a strong, powerful CM, a pacey, direct winger, and a striker. All of Premiership quality. Get all of those five in, and I'll have every confidence in our ability to survive.

Clearly though that is completely unrealistic. I couldn't even see that happening in a Summer transfer window, let alone in a January transfer window when you're in the middle of a relegation battle. So if we can get two of those five, I'll be happy. Any less than two, and I'll continue to really fear for us.

A keeper is the one player that warrents a big investment, he represents a player that can play for the club for 10 years, rarely has to retire because of injuries and generally gets better after a few years. Butland may be expensive at 8 million but that only means 1 million a year until he is 28 and still worth money in resale if needed. Look at Peter Cech cost 7 million, has provided 8 years of service and is still rated as one of the top keepers. Butland may be abit young and inexperienced so I would probably look at a 25 year old with 3 or 4 years experience. A good keeper is worth 10 points a season

Don't think we will be spending big in January....very difficult to get a decent player in that you want to keep in January. Adkins has said there will be no panic buys....so perhaps we will be buying in quiet desperation.

Yet the Jan transfer window is when all the money is spent.

A Centre back has to be a priority if not two. Jose has been superb of late, Maya has improved and shown great commitment, not sure he is PL standard though.

We've been lucky so far neither has got injured or suspended, got Jos has back up but other than that the cupboard is bare. For whatever reason, one if not both will miss games between now and the end of the season. Saying that I'm sure a CB is the first thing on NA's new years wish list, Who??, I haven't a clue. Continually being linked with Scott Dann but not sure he is the answer.

If we can pick up any real quality then I'll be happy to see players in any position, under the assumption we wont be able to get any properly good players without spending stupidly big then I'd at least like to see us pick up a CB and a Winger for depth.

Pretty sure it is one of those overused cliche things that the pundits spew out on SSN, but January really can make or break the season for a side going for the title or fighting off relegation. Last Jan we acquired Billy Sharp whos goals played a massive part in getting us over the line. This Jan we need to add a couple of players that are better than what we have to really make sure we are fully equipped to stay up.

Butland looked good during the Summer but I don't imagine he's done too well this season looking at Birmigham's defensive record. I heard someone once say that the difference between him and Gazza is that he has a large price tag, wouldn't really improve us.

exactly true, not looking for squad players but first team CB, keeper and winger

Whilst I wouldn't disagree that the squad needs investment, I sincerely hope the principles we have had over the last few years regarding transfers are not abandoned. I have no reason to think they will..... But a few people seem to forget this fact. As long as this window is used as an extension of last summers window to try and get a few long term prospects in, the long term aims remain unchanged.

I'm terms of personnel, I'm insure coz I haven't got the time to see how other squads are.... Maybe Lens from PSV....? In terns of a strong / y'all midfielder-I'm really not sure, half the Prem seem to want a new CB, so I'm not sure. More than happy for SKD to continue for the remainder of the season-his overall contribution over the course of a season will be worth it. In terms of a striker, I'd love to see Sharp back.... Although I partly agree he doesn't fit out current system.... I'm still depressed when plan B or C is Guly..... No visible heart or passion. Billy brings this in bucketfuls, has a very positive relationship with fans, and never complained about being played out of position. However, I think he wouldn't want to after we treated him shabbily last year. However, in Adkins and cortese we have to trust.

he Saints chief is thought to be on the look-out for new midfield options in light of skipper Adam Lallana's injury absence because of knee ligament damage.
The England international has already sat out two games and is not likely to be available to Adkins over the next few weeks.
There could be an opportunity for Adkins to bolster his squad when the transfer window opens for business next week, but he is not letting anything out of the bag.
"He's not going to play against Stoke and that is all we're going to talk about," said Adkins in the Daily Echo, when asked for an update on Lallana.
"We are not going to speculate about anybody. It is fair to say in January all teams will be open for business."
Adkins has also had problems in the goalkeeper department this season as he has not been able to find a settled number one out of Kelvin Davis, Paulo Gazzaniga and Artur Boruc. But he would not be drawn on fresh reports linking him with a bid for Blackburn's Paul Robinson.
"There is speculation about everybody, I don't know where it comes from half the time," he added.
"We've got three goalkeepers vying for the positions. I have high hopes for Paulo and two experienced goalkeepers.
"On the training ground they are working really hard and Kelvin has got the shirt at the moment."

The press must really hate interviewing Nigel!
