What do you do when it comes to name dropping?

If you want to mention say a movie title, do you need permission to use this.

What about a building, say a University. Would I need permission to use said universitys name

Write it as you see fit and let the editor/publisher worry about the rest.

Have you ever partaken in writing books Rebelbhoy?

Ps. I noticed young Alan Smith was on the pitch at half time at the game on Saturday, great reception he got, which will no doubt please you in your quest to rid Scottish football of racism.

Just thought I'd spread the good news. <ok>

I know it isn't much help but I asked my sister & cousin the same question. My cousin was pretty successful and knew what she was on about and said never to worry about stuff like that. Just make sure what you write is accurate.

Roddy Doyle talked about the same subject when he wrote "a star called Henry". Most of his work prior to that had a contemporary setting but this one, he was painstakingly accurate about what he wrote about people and places.

Same with James Joyce's 'Ulysses'. He wrote it in France and wrote letters home to find out if you could see certain buildings from a certain vantage point or what not.

I have written a few chapters of a novel. I think it is pretty good....but I would say that wouldn't I.
I have written a number of boring manuals that are boring to write, boring to read and boring to follow.

Smith on his own, or part of the squad? The older he gets, and the closer to the squad he gets, the less I understand it, but someone has got to do it. Maybe he will be remembered as the Rosa parks of scottish fitba.

He was on his own.

He was in goals while some fans hit penalties into him.

Hello Aberdeengooner.

Mentioning a building or the title of a film (or even some of the people in either the building or the film) is hardly going to be a problem – just so long as you stick to (provable) facts.

If you’re going to say that X raped Y, however, then you need to have verifiable sources (some pictures would be nice) and/or very good legal representation.

Also, don’t put words into other people’s mouths: if they didn’t say something, don’t say that they did. Simple.

If you’re self-publishing – there seems to be a lot of it about these days – then I strongly recommend that you get someone (with legal training training, obviously) to look over your manuscript, lest you unintentionally find yourself saying something actionable. This needn’t be as expensive as you might fear.

If you already have a publisher, however, then stop worrying, as they’ll be very likely make sure that you don’t say anything regrettable (as Rebelbhoy already mentioned).

If you don’t already have a publisher, then get yourself an agent - as it’s very rare for a publishing house to accept unsolicited, un-agented manuscripts these days. Sad but true. The agent will then approach the publishing house on your behalf, just so long as they’re happy to punt your work.

Finding an agent needn’t be hard, either. A good place to start, if you’re feeling stumped, is The Writers’ and Artists Yearbook (published annually and readily available from Amazon). I’m pretty sure they have a list of agents somewhere. And even if they don’t, it’s still an invaluable tool for any aspiring (or even established) writer.

Personally, I’d stick to fiction. You can get away with saying any old ****e under the useful catch-all umbrella of “invention”.

Good luck.

Thanks very much mate.

It is a fiction book im writing but wasn't sure if i'd be allowed to name an actor's name in a passing comment.

Im assuming im freely allowed to reference buildings and monuments.

example: John Smith stood gazing at the Louvre, if memory served, he was standing in roughly the same spot Tom Hanks was when he over-dramatically dropped to his knees in the Da Vinci Code.

it'll have to be more like this .....example: John Smith stood gazing at the french place, if memory served, he was standing in roughly the same spot your man the actor was when he over-dramatically dropped to his knees in the film about the thing.

<ok>
