Hes wa bought by Chelski for about £6m, wudda been more but he ran down down his contract and left on a "free", the £6m was the compenstion thing as he was under 21( you cant really leave on a free if under 21) ,he has 18 months left of his contract not 6 months

Nah, I mean his last transfer, he was 21 or under, and he left Citeh for Chelski was out of contract, normally that would mean he left on a free but due to his age a compensation claim was allowed that was deemed to be about £6m due to his ability.I think hes about 23/24 now

    <doh> FFS.....

Not the thread, but the fact that we may sign Sturridge...... Really don't want him. Saying that if he arrives, and if he is a success, that might restore a bit of faith in David Brent as manager, for whom, I currently have precious little....

I know what you meant, I thought it went to a tribunal if the player is under 24 and out of contract.

I think Sturridge is a GOOD signing and Ill tell you why,and I think LFC will have looked at this from a similar angle

Hes a good player, he has ability, technically good ,can finish, experienced for his age, confidence and selfishness you need in a number 9,pace and power.

Weakness. Attitude. In sport attitude/mental side can play a massive apart in success, but with his qualties I think most would agree Sturridge has what it takes to be a top player.

It could go either way IMO
If he flops, we probably still get £6m for him where we to sell him in 2 yrs, were he to succeed he could be worth 3/4 as much much.IMO its a LOW RISK transfer,Carroll and Downing wer very high risk transfers, Carroll as we could never re coup £35m if it went wrong, and Downing cos if he failed signing at 27, selling him at 29 we were never gonna get a third even back of the fee if it went wrong

I think Sturridge will be a good signing.

It will also make our role in the England squad even bigger.

I think most have concerns over this signing and rightly so. Lets just hope he can learn and improve because if he does it may well prove to be a brilliant signing.

Sturridge has pace, is good technically and will strengthen our squad, we know we are buying a future England player, fact is he is only 23.

  10. Can't help but wonder how he will link up with Suarez and Gerrard. I think the latter will find it easier as he will be able to play similar balls to what he used to do for Owen and then Torres. However, I think the partnership with Suarez will make or break this deal. I can see both getting pissed off with the other as they are both extremely ball greedy.

Sturridge should work better with Suarez than Carroll.

Sturridge will do well getting into the space that Suarez opens up. Could get a good number of goals.

Pretty sure he signed a four year deal in July 2009. Haven't seen anything anywhere about an extension to that deal. Article discussing that from August:

Agreed. And why do people always talk about his ego? Would you be surprised if he's developed a little bit of an ego having John Terry as a 'role model' in the Chelsea team?

I bet when he comes to Liverpool and sees how a experienced professional like Gerrard has at times sacrified goals and the chance of glory by playing deeper in central midfield or even right back in the past to benefit the team then he'll soon change his views on playing out wide.

I actually think he will replicate Johnson's career in a way where the determination to prove Chelsea wrong will drive him on and motivate him to do really well in his career and go on to be a success.

Think it will be a good signing. Let's be honest, we need a forward and the guy is proven in the Premiership (something like 40 odd goals so far?) and can play in any of the positions in a front 3 althouh obviously prefers to be played as the CF. That flexibility will allow him to interchange with Suarez and another to mix thingsup a bit.

Can't see him being a total flop and will always score at least 10 goals I'd think if given a decent amount of games. Will he turn into a superstar? Maybe not... but he'll get goals and hopefully take some of the burden off Suarez which in turn should allow Suarez to relax a bit and maybe take more of the chances that he creates. Will also give us another option if Suarez was to ever get injured/suspended and we don't have to play Shelvey there.

With the movement of Borini, Skill of Suarez and potential ability of Sturridge it could be a good forward line that develops there.

I think the scepticism on here is a little unjust.

He is a good player, scores goals, is quick, young and cheap at 12 mill if you ask me. Despite his contract running out, we've seen with RVP how players still hold value.

I think he will very quick become an important player for us and i'm quite excited. Chelsea's loss is our gain if you ask me.

    Low risk, high gain.

What concerns? At 12 mill the risk is low.

For an English player, 12million is alright and low risk.

I rate Sturridge also, he's a good player with a promising future if he gets regular game time. I just hope he doesn't go the way of many other promising English players and come to nothing.

My issue is that for 12million, we could have arguably got someone better from abroad.

I guess it depends on our transfer budget. 12M seems like low risk if we're going to have another 30M to spend on strengthening the squad, but my concern is that the 12M for Sturridge is probably the majority of our budget going on one player who is a bit of a gamble.

I'm not convinced you could you know.

If we wanted to get someone from abroad who is proven here, it would cost at least that - Michu.

To get someone abroad with a similar value is a lot higher risk as they're not proven to succeed here.

The Prem is a graveyard for players supposedly good enough in Spain/Italy who come here and don't do it - both unproven and proven.

I think the risk is far greater looking abroad with a budget of 12 mill.

Sturridge has scored goals in this country and at this level. It wasn't that long ago he was seen as the future up front for them.

I think Chelsea have missed a trick, or are going to buy someone for 40 million which we obviously can't compete with.

Some of the scepticism reminds me of peoples comments on Bellers. It was a no brainer for me and it turned out to be.

It might not work out, but this is the sort of player we shoudl of bought instead of Carroll.
