City fans This is for gasheads to nominate as its the gas not606 dream team. However, any reds that want to nominate still can nominate if you wish. The right winger thread where 3 reds took part was very respectful and that was nice to see. Feel free reds to add your nominations if you wish to take part like the right winger thread but I will only count the gasheads nominations to keep to the game
From Twerton days I always enjoyed watching Lee Archer, and with the wealth of players queueing up for CF there's cases to be made for Marcus Stewart or Rickie Lambert playing out on the LW. But for me there's only one candidate, and I'm afraid I'm going back to the 'good old days' again! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Hooper PETER HOOPER......297 games and 101 goals! Trickery, pace, wicked cross and a thunderous shot; harder. it was said, than Peter Lorimer's. Lovely bloke too who had a twinkle in his eye and a gentle humour.
OK CJS I know it will not count. But for me Peter Hooper by a long way. And he made the cross city move to Ashton Gate later in his career. He had a hell of a shot in his left foot and I remember a game in the late 50's versus Leicester City. Rovers get a penalty at the Tote end and Hooper really leathered the ball. Unfortunately a couple of inches off target, it hit the bar and rebounded some forty yards toward the halfway line where a Leicester goalscoring legend Arthur Rowley collected the ball. He was not the quickest but very big and strong and set off toward the Muller road end. At about 35 yards out he let fly and it screamed past Howard Radford for a sensational goal. Oh and by the way, I see you are now bottom of the heap in League Two. It's 30 years this month since we found ourselves there. I believe and sincerely hope that you will pull yourselves up the table over Christmas and into the New Year. So happy Christmas and lots of points in the New Year.
I know that few of you will have seen Peter Hooper play but Cider is right. No one since has been in the same class as Peter Hooper.
Because he got the 2nd most nominations in the RW thread He played before my time. For all I know he may have played on both wings I dont know I just counted the nominations for each player and he got the 2nd most nominations so put him down for that position If anyone wants me to change this then no probs. It will mean then we have to do a poll as the next highest nomination was joint between quite a few players.
come on gasheads, soon as this LW position is completed then all we have is the strikers to finish of the gas not606 team.
mark walters will have to do as none of us seems to know weather certain players play on the left or right side of midfield
Don't want to get banned for trouble making Captain Jack but I think Percy played on the left and Boris Mehew on the right. Harolds got to be the right winger hasn't he ?
Banned?? No chance of that happening here unless you make racist remarks or abusive threatening behaviour Opinions are respected here even if they differ with anyone else. Im a gashead 1st and mod 2nd. I only do mod stuff with the house rules get broken and as you have seen in your short time here, it is rare for house rules to be broken as we are very easy going This aint my board or my site. Im just a member like yourself who loves the gas even if opinions differ on whats best for the gas so have no worries here As for the rest of your comment.... Harold is the 1st choice RW and is in the starting 11 of team Percy is on the bench as reserve RW. Again it wasnt me who picked Percy. Percy got the 2nd most nominations in the RW thread so been entered in reserve as a RW. IF people want Percy off the reserve list then thats fine by me, no probs. The next player to have the most nominations for reserve RW is several players who have the same amount of nominations. A poll will be needed if anyone wants Percy off the RM reserve list. Does anyone want this done or happy to leave it as it is?
Sorry I was getting confused I see Harold is in the team at RW. My vote is for Percy at LW but from what my Dad said and others say I think Peter Hooper is probably the best to have played there for Rovers.
Percy was definitely my favourite left winger for Rovers. He def played there. Tony Pounder played there as well who had a few good games. BUt Percy def my favourite. Can't wait until you get to strikers. Dennis Bailey?
Just to be very pedantic. Nigel Martyn is spelt with a Y in his surname not an I. Also Steve Yates cannot be best CB. He was good when he could pass back, as soon as the rule changed it ruined him. Gary Mabbutt was our best ever Centre Back by an absolute mile. John Scales was better than Steve Yates as well
