It is legal in every state but Illinois if you have the proper permits. It is a much tougher to get a conceal/carry permit than to simply purchase a gun.

To your first point it couldnt be a law. It would have to be a constitutional ammendment. That is the hardest thing to do in our system. It takes 66% of the house and 66% of the senate and you have to avoid a filibuster. Then it takes 75% of the states to ratify it and they have 2 years to do so. State ratification takes 66% of the state house and 66% of the state senate avoiding state fiibusters then the govenors signature. This is why so few ammendments have ever happend. That is all off memory so my % might be a little off but I think I got it right.

To your second point. Sort of. There is no state where it is illegal to have a concealed firearm if you have a concealed firearm permit. I believe that there are no states where you can carry a concealed firearm without a permit. In almost every state (and it may be every state) you can do what they call "open carry" that means it is legal to have a gun if it is visable. You do not need a permit for that.

Good discussion and also excellent reading/sharing - all too frequently missed as a valuable element of forums. I'm still not sure about where you are coming from, ellewood, but you are interesting and engaging; good to meet you!

I normally try to stay away from anything remotely political on here but have you seen the **** coming from the NRA? Armed people in schools? "The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun"?

Apologies to the Americans on here, but that's one ****ed up country.

Don't forget - they think they are still living on the Frontier, fighting the Savages, possessing a Manifest Destiny, blah, blah, blah......

After Columbine we had a police officer stationed in our school. When I lived in Europe we also had armed guards. Teachers armed? No thanks. A police officer around? Ok. Most of the time they are just trying to catch someone speeding anyway. A lot of schools already have cops in them, especially schools in the city or ones with a large student population.

We still need some gun control, mental health reform etc. But I don't think a cop in a school is a terrible idea, after all, even with new gun legislation we still have well over 200 million guns. Those guns wont be going away anytime soon.

the thing that the NRA feller was kind of right about - but doomed to be misunderstood is that the lack of a deterrent (by someone with a gun) at schools makes it the magnet for those wanting the notoriety with their own suicide .
Not that i condone arming teachers amongst school kids (as teachers and kids can equally flip) but the Bloke has a point and there is an awful amount of guns out there that probably make any meaningful change unlikely .

LaPierre may come across as an idiot to us in the UK but his argument has logical substance to it . . . sadly the only real way to beat a dickhead with a gun is a good guy with a gun

i'm with you. when you consider just how many british casualties have been caused by "friendly fire" from us troops over the years, it's just not a recipe for improvement.

Ellewood, you may not understand that in the main, Northern Ireland is the exception, we see very few guns. Our Police are generally unarmed. We have a vast cultural difference and view gun ownership as either for sport or for crime. I am not opposed to what you have posted, but wanted to point out that we are really different.
I have several income streams. I enforce warrants and writs of the court, as well as collect outstanding commercial rents. I also remove activists etc, from properties. I don't even have a stab vest and the only weapon that I have is the peace of paper that gives me the authority to act. I would not do my work if I needed to carry any weapon.
I was asked by the Police (on a job that became aggressive) why I didn't wear a stab vest, my answer was that I didn't want to get stabbed. They actually agreed. It is my view that if I carried a gun, some who wanted to prevent me from doing my job, would arm themselves. Motorcyclists in this country have to wear helmets, there is a view that the added feeling of safety from wearing a helmet has led to increased risks being taken and more rider deaths.
We all read and write in English, but I doubt that if you came to a match that you would understand half of what is said in the pubs before the match. We really are worlds apart and it is encouraging to read your posts and a welcome addition to the debates in general.

statistically if u want to get yourself stabbed you need to be black , get in a huff with a black feller and make sure the argumat takes place in London .
thats why i dont need a stab vest
