http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/4708302/Benefits-curb-on-junkies-and-alkies.html Good or bad idea?
Was reading the comments in the Daily Mail article about this, the most popular were along the lines: "I lost my job and now the government wants to restrict what I can and can't buy. It's bad enough looking for work as it is without being stigmatised by having to produce a card in shops." I tend to agree, you can't punish the decent majority for the sins of the few.
From what I can gather it only affects people on benefits who are registered as drug and/or alcohol dependent. The tabloids conveniently miss out this fact as it doesn't generate sensationalist headlines.
I bought my girlfriend a Chinese-style outfit for her Christmas and Eddie thinks it was made by the hands of deprived Chinese children. I wish it was. It would have been a damn sight cheaper.
Bring in drug tests for people on benefits, if you fail it then you don't get any benefits for 6months. Harsh but it would soon sort people out.
This is the new thinking, the original idea, all be it from one MP, was to cover all people on benefits. As for alcoholics, they'll find a way - shoplifting or a dodgy shopkeeper.
And what about their kids? And, as Eddie points out, they still need money and would turn to crime to pay for their drugs.
