There's no way I could hit Helmut's level of rubbish, I wouldn't be able to stop laughing with how stupid I sounded...

Sounds like Luca is trying to mend bridges with Seb already: http://www.ferrari.com/english/form...215-f1-christmas-with-the-ferrari-family.aspx

While going over the championship just ended, Montezemolo could not avoid mentioning incidents that weighed heavily on Fernando’s season, such as the accidents immediately after the start in Spa and Suzuka, but he also invited everyone present to offer up a round of applause to the world champion, Sebastian Vettel, because “one most always congratulate the winner, because he didn’t do it by chance and because we also hope that next year, someone else will be doing the same for us…”

Vettel-Alonso will never happen, because I don't think it's in either of their interests. Both have nearly or actually lost a title because of an extremely strong teammate (Hamilton 2007, Webber 2010). On top of that, if you had a vote among neutrals for the best drivers of 2010 and 2012, Fernando would probably pip Seb both times, although Vettel has trophies and titles to suggest otherwise. Given that there are at least three drivers capable of snatching a title if given the opportunity (Button, Hamilton and Raikkonen), and given that Ferrari are having enough trouble winning races with one driver doing whatever the other needs, I just don't think either of them would want it that much.

I think Alonso will leave Ferrari in 4 or 5 years, and Vettel will be his replacement.

Montezemolo: Vettel next in line for ‘number 1′ Ferrari seat

Luca di Montezemolo on Thursday admitted reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel is next in line for Ferrari’s ‘number 1′ race seat.

“If, tomorrow, Fernando would withdraw for any reason – let’s say he moves to Hawaii with his girlfriend – then I would want Vettel,” laughed the fabled Maranello based team’s president, according to Auto Motor und Sport.

Spaniard Alonso, however, is tied up contractually for years — and Ferrari is more than happy with him.

“I’m incredibly happy with him,” Montezemolo agreed.

“He is more than just a driver.”

Referring to Ferrari’s influential past drivers Niki Lauda and Michael Schumacher, Montezemolo said Alonso is “a bit of both”.

But he also doesn’t spare his praise of German Vettel, who while contracted to Red Bull has been the subject of long speculation his future could be in red.

“He’s young,” Montezemolo started, “he has his feet on the floor, and he has an indomitable will to win.

“Schumacher made me aware of him years ago because he knew him from his karting years. I must say, Michael was right.”

Montezemolo admitted Vettel, 25, is higher on Ferrari’s wish list than is Lewis Hamilton.

“Because he is younger, and because Ferrari would be Hamilton’s third team. And if you’ve reached your third team, your career is already in its second half.”

Indeed, Montezemolo said he doesn’t even mind that Vettel accused Ferrari of playing “dirty tricks” in a bid to beat him to the 2012 title.

“In the heat of battle,” said the Italian, “you can always say something emotional.”

Montezemolo, however, appeared to rule out pairing Alonso with Vettel, saying that sort of star-studded lineup would be “difficult”.

For now, that keeps Felipe Massa in a job, even though Montezemolo hinted he is keeping his eye on the next generation of potential Ferrari drivers.

He suggested he will be watching Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg and Romain Grosjean very closely.

“Next year, we have two and a half new driving pairings: Perez at McLaren, Hamilton at Mercedes, and the half is the ‘new’ Massa with us.

“I am very curious to see how Hulkenberg goes with our engine at Sauber, and also the young man who on the first laps this year was sometimes a little too fast,” Montezemolo smiled, undoubtedly referring to Frenchman Grosjean.

Seems a bit odd saying that as Ferrari was Fernando's 5th team!?

Jordan - Benetton - Ferrari. I believe that guy did alright for Ferrari in the end ;)

I can see why Ferrari would prefer Vettel over anyone else though.

Montezemolo being kind about someone accusing his team of dirty tricks = Vettel is going to Ferrari.

But then why say a star-studded line-up would be difficult, when Domencali has said Vettel and Alonso could easily coexist together? Also why say that you have a new Massa, and then reveal his potential replacement? The whole interview gives off the impression that they want Vettel at Ferrari in 2017 or later (whenever Alonso retires), which contradicts earlier evidence.

Maybe Ferrari think the only way to beat a Vettel-RB combo is to have Vettel at Ferrari. Maybe they now think Vettel is better than Alonso and so want him sooner rather than later. Who knows what's going through the minds of the Ferrari hierarchy until it happens...

I can't help thinking that this whole saga is a ruse by Vettel to up his bargaining power. He hardly needs to but with two top teams chasing him he can pick, choose and demand to his heart's content.

I can't help thinking that Alonso and Vettel are aliens and that this entire debacle is a conspiracy concocted up in Area 51 to hide what really happened in Chernobyl <ok>

Sounds like Alonso will be kicked out before Seb gets that seat. I'm certain I heard the same things when Kimi was there before he was convienetly replaced with 2 years left on his contract. (2014) = 2 years left on Alonso's contract... Coincident?

Vettel to Mercedes would be better. To go there and mirror Schumacher in a Ferrari would be great.

Kimi was being outperformed by Massa. Alonso is thrashing Massa. Ferrari will replace their weaker driver if anyone.

Also just something about that star-studded lineup being difficult...they were in talks with Hamilton this year, and they wanted a Raikkonen-Schumacher line-up for 2007. So why would Vettel-Alonso be a problem?

But the pear is the most complete fruit. Apples are only popular because their trees are better.... Or something.
