I would be interested in your opinions of a revamp to the points system, which I feel would encourage more attacking football and hopefully reduce incidences of away teams 'parking the bus' when they visit particular grounds.

The changes I was considering are as follows:

4 points for an away win.
1 bonus point for a home win of 3 or more goals (win+)
1 bonus point for an away win of 2 or more goals (win+)
-1 for a home defeat of 2 or more goals (loss+)
-1 for an away defeat of 3 or more goals. (loss+)

    Example 1:
Latest score ANYONE Utd 2-0 SOMEONE City
If things stay as they are, Utd get 3 points for a win
But instaed of sitting on the lead and running down the clock with 3 minutes remaining, Utd have the incentive to push for a 3rd goal, which would give them an extra point AND take 1 away from City.

    Example 2:
    Latest score: Utd 1-2 City
Utd have the incentive to push forward for an equalizer, as they do now. City, instead of just soaking up the pressure, have the incentive, even in stoppage time, of pushing forward for another goal that would give them an extra point and also condemn Utd to getting -1.

As for how it will affect the tables, I have taken the Blue Square Prem table, as their season has finished and this is how it would have looked under that system.

Although the same 4 sides are in the playoffs and the same 4 have been relegated, there are some notable differences.

Fleetwood have gone above Wrexham so will play Luton instead of Wimbledon in the play-offs.
Bath drop from 10th to 13th
Hayes & Yeading drop from 16th to 19th
Forest Green just survived on goal difference in reality, but here they are 2 points clear of Southport, thanks to a couple of Win+ away from home.

I'll maybe do the Premier League table tomorrow, to see how that would look with a couple of games each to play.

Your input would be much appreciated <ok>

Here is the Premier League table, as it would look under this system after yesterday's games

As you can see there is a major change at the top of the table, with Chelsea top by a point from Manchester United. Arsenal are only behind United on goal difference!

Tottenham, the only side not to have a single W+ point or L+ deduction, find themselves 3 points adrift of Liverpool, who have leapfrogged them into 5th.

West Ham, who were 3 points from safety now find themselves 8 from survival. They aren't down yet though as they could pick up 9 points from their last 2 games, while those above could end up with -2! The hammers still have to visit Wigan, where they will have extra incentive to go for a second goal if they are 1 up.

Birmingham suddenly find themselves above the trap door only on goal difference.

Nice one Devo, but can you imagine the effect in the stands. Its the of the season and it's touch and go for promotion or relegation. The news filters through that someone, somewhere else has scored. Usually there would be a cheer or depressed sigh. Under your system, ther would blank looks for 10 minutes until the guy with the "Devo" App works out what it means on his iPhone! <laugh>

I remember well, everyone going loopy when 3 points for a win was first suggested, but it happened.

If people would like something to add just a little spice, what about 3.5 points for an away win?

One major result when the system is used on this season's Championship

    Champ W+.jpg

is that SWANSEA would take the 2nd automatic promotion spot, demoting Norwich to the Play-offs

    Pompey remain unchanged in 16th.

i don't think away wins and home wins should be awarded differently, a win is a win. and as channonfodder has already said, it is a tad complex

NOT as complex as the AV vote for future elections, that the LibDems & New Labour wanted to introduce. :emoticon-0112-wonde

They say 'variety is the spice of life', so why not introduce an idea to "liven up" the game ?!
