defensive minded playmaker. would replace johnson - has the tenacity of bradley and combines it with the vision of fox. but as you say, with teams like ac milan after him and a price tag of £8m, its unlikely we'll stand much hope of signing the guy.

I may be having a senior moment, but isn't that more or less how you described Bridcutt the other day?

sounds like a hughton-type player with that description. we could pretty much guarantee him first team football, unlike some of the others.
one things for sure, either in January or next summer, we are going to break our record transfer fee you'd have thought (Earnshaw i believe)

certainly not, but if a better player comes along (and biglia is much, much better) then that's just the way it goes. i'd be saying the same about holt if we were linked to a top striker.

yes cromer, that is close to what i said about bridcutt - but biglia is a better player, no question (hence the price tag for starters!)

Id love to see this happen and I believe we should perhaps take a gamble on him even at that price (if we can afford it). We are far enough away from the bottom to be looking up rather than down and if he comes he is only going to strengthen our side. People might argue "what if he gets injured and we've spent that much money on him?"- that is why it is a gamble but hey, we still have the players we already have here who are capable of replacing him to keep us up but maybe not quite as good to aim higher than 17th.

The one reservation I would have would be the old "what about squad harmony?" question. We have a lot of midfielders and with Wes having just been given a new contract, Tettey being awesome and Johnson playing well, the likes of Howson and Fox cant get a look in really.Biglia would push everyone with the exception of Tettey and Wes down in the pecking order (imo). This could lead to great competition in the ranks or some disgruntled fringe players?

I must admit Biglia, Tettey, Wes, Johnson, Butterfield (when he returns), Fox and Howson would give us some majorly good midfield options! 4 sitting players and 3 attacking players. THAT is strength in depth!

Alas, I cannot see it happening which is a shame because I genuinely think top ten is a realistic finishing position for us (perhaps it is without Biglia but he'd certainly help the cause)! Finishing so high up would give us the money to go out and buy a striker in the summer and who knows where we could go from there the following season!

Perhaps i am reading too much into the potential signing of one player but That's what you get when you are linked with genuine class at what I would consider a very reasonable price tag considering he is an Argentina international!

Just re-read my first paragraph and I didnt mean to sound so derogatory towards the players we have. Of course they can aim higher than 17th, Christ look where we are now! What I meant was that Biglia has the extra class to enable us to really push higher rather than be stuck in the lets just make sure we stay up mentality.

I know this mentality is working that them moment but I think if you spend too long considering yourself as a lets stay up team, you could end up being dragged into the dogfight. Breed the confidence of a lets push for Europe team and it is less likely we will get dragged down.

Set new targets, set higher sights. We have a quality manager and great players. One more great player can only be a good thing!

One last point- It could also be argues that money as much as £8m should be spent on a quality striker rather than ANOTHER midfielder. I wholeheartedly agree that we could get a very good striker for this money and should if we the opportunity arises, rather than go for Biglia.

However, if no striker names crop up, id say Biglia would be a fantastic signing.

Good posts Bedford. Agree entirely..there has to be a point when the board say right lets push on and aim for top half or continue with the aim of staying up. With all external debt cleared this season end and where we are in the league now I think we can afford to take a small gamble.

The Metro had a story about him this morning, sounds like Arsenal are battling with AC Milan for his signature so don't get your hopes up too much boys and girls
