Swp: Nellie and hilly drive me mad …

…But it’s just what we need!

SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS says the nagging and moaning that he hears from QPR defenders Clint Hill and Ryan Nelsen drives him mad, but it’s just what’s required as the R’s aim to win their battle with relegation.

Rangers moved off the foot of the table on Saturday, courtesy of a 2-1 win over west London rivals Fulham.

While Adel Taarabt’s trickery and goals stole the headlines, Wright-Phillips says the pair at the heart of the backline deserve a great deal of credit for the team’s performance against the Cottagers.

“Nellie and Hilly are constantly talking to everyone in front of them and it helps a lot,” he revealed.

“As an attacker sometimes you can lose concentration because you’re thinking about going forward, but with them in your ear it keeps you on your toes – even if it does irritate you! They put you in the right positions to make the interceptions and tackles needed.”

Rangers produced arguably their performance of the season in Harry Redknapp’s second home match in charge, and Wright-Phillips believes no-one can deny the R’s were worthy of maximum points.

“We got everything we deserved,” he added. “We controlled the game from start to finish. I think they only had two corners and one deflected shot which went in.

“Let’s not get it wrong, Fulham are a great team. They showed us that last season so to come up against them and control the game in the way we did just shows we are a team that’s moving in the right direction.

“I thought we defended really well. When we had to put our foot in, we did that.”

Since Redkapp’s arrival, Wright-Phillips seems to be enjoying a new lease of life. He has started the last three games and admits to being lifted by the response he has received from the R’s fans.

“My recent performances have a lot to do with my team-mates and the fans, who have been very supportive of me especially over the last few games,” he explained.

“Even if I have made a mistake they’ve still urged me on. Considering the position we are in, that’s just what we need.

“That sort of backing and support makes a massive difference for me and for the rest of the team. It gives you the confidence to get the ball and try again, and the next time it might come off.”

The R’s have recorded three draws and a win under Redknapp, and will be aiming to add to their points tally this weekend at Newcastle United.

“We’ve got to try to keep that unbeaten run going and keep picking up points, no matter who we are up against,” added Wright-Phillips.

“We need to be as strong and as resilient this weekend as we were on Saturday.”

That's hysterical. Have you ever heard SWP interviewed? He can barely string two words together, let alone the beautiful flowing sentences "quoted" here. The PR boys have let their creative juices flow on this one.

No criticism of SWP for not being articulate, he can't help that. It's also sweet that he thanks the fans for their support, blissfully unaware that there was plenty of irony in the cheering of his name last weekend.

 

I thought Hill and Nelsen were immense on Saturday , mind you they were helped by berbatov going so deep, picking the ball up from his centre halves. Fulham going forward were as bad as we have been at any part of this season.

 

Not so sure SB as I spoke to him and was amazed myself. He is shy without doubt ... Who wouldn't be after having his dad? We know he suffered from confidence but I for one have always seen his talent and his work rate
Still my number two son's favourite player and if any youngster wants to see movement without the ball then watch SWP a true master... The main reason I know on here who knows what about soccer I mean football

If there is one thing I hope for on here is that posters see SWP score and only then they may change their views

I stand corrected on the articulacy, shyness in front of the cameras perfectly understandable. We'll have to agree to differ regarding the talent - you see things in him that I have never spotted. But no denying he is doing a much more effective job now, is obviously a confidence player and I suspect a goal or two could make me eat a portion of my words. Harold doing the business on him.

 

I really want him to do well but us Wright-Phillips protagonists have been saying the same thing for 18 months now and he has never yet delivered. There comes a time when you have to admit the majority have it right about him. He did OK on Saturday however so maybe one last chance Shaun...

 

I thought also SWP was "immense" Saturday. Five Four and immense! I saw some of the game again last night, and his tackling back was - immense - funny to see Fulham's attackers seem really shocked when they realised they'd been robbed suddenly from behind by a really speedy mighty mouse biting their ankles and knicking the ball of them before they realised what was going on.

 

Despite the balance of play, with a bit of luck Fulham could still have nicked a 2-2 draw. When other teams are experiencing an off day, we really have to put any sort of result for them totally out of reach.
