Sorry folks ...am I thick or something....but why would a tube strike affect our game with Fulham. I accept that not so many of us would be able to get to the game but surely the majority will. They still have buses don't they? Or am I being a bit cynical.....
The cleaners at London Underground are members of RMT and have in fact recently taken part in strikes: http://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/london-underground-cleaners-strike-over-pay-8360045.html I don't think any cleaner expects a large salary, but they expect a fair salary and fair working conditions, and until they feel they have that they are entitled to strike (or "hold the public to ransom" as you call it). Not everyone is as lucky as you are to have gone to college and been able to better themselves through education, but they should still be entitled to fair pay and the same rights that other people enjoy. You may never have taken strike action but by being part of a union you have assuredly benefitted from the actions of other people who have.
Idealistic garbage from mr know-it-all as usual. Nothing lucky about my life chap - nobody gave me anything, i worked for it. I can assure you that i have not assuredly benefitted from strike action of others - our union has not been involved in strikes during my working life. Anyway i hope that our great away support can get to Fulham OK on Boxing Day, ASLEF tossers or not.
The socialist way of thinking makes me laugh, it has never worked in the 90 years that it has been around. You say good for the drivers looking for more money, but thier blackmailing will only result in ticket prices going up or some workers down the food chain loosing thier job.
I may be a know-it-all but at least I am civil! By being in a union you are benefitting from the work done by other unions. I can assure you that nobody gets where they are without the help of a bit of luck, and indeed the goodwill and effort of other people, even if you're too ignorant to notice.
My Father happens to be a member of ASLEF. He's definitely not striking though. Has nothing to do with the tube. Although for what it's worth he doesn't particularly support the tube workers on all these strikes. They are an effective union, that's what they are intended for. He has even worked for them. I shall now retire from the thread to avoid the barrage of abuse.
It's a fairly pointless strike and I can't say I have much sympathy at this point. It seems more like they are striking because they can and because it will work, than because they actually need to. If I was being paid £40-50k a year to do a low-skill average-hours job then I'd happily work on Boxing Day. As it is can't even get a low-skill high-hours job for a third of that.
Aren't tube drivers on 50k per year or something ridiculous? Sure, you want to make it a fairly well paid job in order to facilitate a high demand for the role allowing you to pick the best staff while also making sure employed people are kept motivated but seriously, they can't complain about their salary considering most managers get paid less than that.
It's not about salary, it's purely about Boxing Day itself. Because of increased demand for public transport, working on Boxing Day is now mandatory rather than voluntary. They basically want triple pay and and an extra day off in return for having to work on a bank holiday. I understand it's not ideal having to work Boxing Day and their demands are not entirely unreasonable, but as far as I'm concerned, you're making £50k a year to sit in a box and push buttons and pull levers 5 days a week... Live with it...
Other people have to work boxing day and don't get paid double let alone triple wages. Don't like it, find another job.
I am working on Boxing Day - due to this the Fulham game will be only the 3rd away game that i have missed this season so far - but i am not being paid double or triple time ! Nor would i strike to get this, as i am paid a reasonable salary as it is. The LU Tube drivers are just militant greedy sods.
I'll say again, just because you've already lost these rights doesn't mean everyone else should as well. You don't have to agree with them on this particular issue, but by accepting low pay and low standards for some workers you harm everyone else too. If you want what they have, join a union and fight to improve your lot not denigrate others.
I get double time on Boxing Day because I am on an old contract, but people on new contracts get single pay on bank holidays...so basically they don't get bank holidays. No time owing. Think its very unfair even though it doesn't affect me directly. You should get a day off if you work bank holidays.
You can't assure me of anything - and your posts show that the only ignorant person around here is you. You are an idealistic ignorant person who likes to play the big i-am on just about any topic aired on here.
Or we could live in cloud cuckoo land where no-one has to work boxing day (and if they do they should get quintuple pay) or accept wage cuts as we're clearly in a period of economic boom and can afford to throw money at people. please log in to view this image To be fair, that I do agree with. The triple pay and striking? Not a chance.
There will always be people that work Boxing Day/bank holidays but they should get single pay + time off or double pay minimum. That's not a lot to ask. Especially when you realise that the people on higher pay get a better deal than that anyway.
No-one is arguing that nobody should have to work bank holidays, simply that it's fair and they get, for example a day in lieu or a financial compensation they are satisfied with.
