O'Neill hopes to keep Danny Rose

Martin O'Neill says it is too early to discuss a permanent deal for Danny Rose at Sunderland and just hopes Tottenham Hotspur do not recall the full-back in January.

Rose is on a season-long loan at the Stadium of Light and the England Under-21 international has impressed in making 14 appearances for Sunderland.

The left-back, who can also play in midfield, has previously said he would be keen to join the Black Cats permanently and O'Neill has been delighted with the 22-year-old's contribution.

However, the Sunderland manager's biggest concern is the possibility of his Tottenham counterpart Andre Villas-Boas summoning Rose back to White Hart Lane next month.

"It's very premature to talk about a permanent move because we haven't discussed it with Tottenham," said O'Neill in the Daily Mirror.

"The reaction of our crowd suggests they'd like to have him permanently but there's a way to go before that happens.

"Tottenham have the ability to recall Danny in January. If that's the case, I'm just trying to enjoy him being here with us.

"He knows there are areas where he can improve, but he's pleased with his performances and is enjoying it here immensely.

"He's also taking on extra responsibility going forward. He's not just a defensive full-back."

**** so we wont be buying him in January, i think its a big mistake

If Danny goes back I think we will be back in for Strinic

really want us to get Rose he has been absolutely outstanding for us and its about time we signed a loan player up to a long term contract who has been impressive for us

This scares me. If another club offer Spurs a fee they could accept it re call him and we could be a man down.

On the flipside though, he only seems to want to play for one club

Doubt it Parker as I think we would be given first bid (as long as he wanted to stay).

I genuinely think the lad has got the bug for North-East football, on top of that he commented on how he was glad to be nearer to his Yorkshire based family.

Us, Toon & Liverpool the only option.

I think the fans love rules out the Toon, he clearly appreciates it, although he is a blueprint Toon signing, young and will only improve, and increase in value.

Liverpool? Well he pisses all over Enrique, but Enrique is a quality left back, would they shell £6-10million? I doubt it.

Hopefully I'm right, cos the lad is ****ing brilliant, and seems a top man as well.

To be honest, he is not at the required level for Spurs. They will probably cash in on him with Sunderland being the most likely destination. For what it is worth, I'd have him here in a flash.

You think so??? I am not so sure on that. BAE plays very well for Spurs and even their fans rate him much higher than Rose.

They rate him higher than Rose BEFORE he had a run of games left back in the league and developed his confidence.

I do rate BAE, but Rose is genuinely superb, or has been, I honestly think he's nailed on England's next LB.

True. However if they were to replace BAE, I don't think it would be for Rose.

Fits in well here and guaranteed permanent first team football and adulation. Not so at Spurs, but if we lose him in Jan there is always another time.

See, I'm inclined o agree, as they are a potential CL side, but are there a wealth of LB options about, pacey, good going forward and solid defensively?

Not many I can think of in truth mate.

BAE very much underrated. Him, Enrique, Rose? Nowt in it for me, they are all quality. I know you rate him Mush but to suggest he pishes all over two top quality PL full backs proven over a long period is pushing it a little for me. Top class though, he'll sign for Sunderland in June because that is what he clearly wants. Unless they are relegated which they won't be.

Easy mate, I never said he pisses all over Enrique, and as said I do rate BAE, I just think Rose will develop into a better player. I will admit my choice of words was a bit strong on that!

I'd take him over BAE given the straight choice, but I guess Spurs lads would laugh at that!

They have Naughton & Vertonghen as well who can play LB, so I can see us still getting the lad.
