Just as intriguing, for those who like to lambaste American Football being called such when the ball interacts primarily with hands, most of the earliest forms of Football were named thus, not because you kicked a ball with your foot, but because they were played on foot. Peasants played most of their sports on foot; aristocrats played most of theirs on horseback. Thus, games played on foot were called âfootballâ, whether they had anything to do with kicking a ball or not. Indeed, many of the earliest forms of football involved carrying balls in an attempt to get across goal lines passed some opposing team or individual players. DaiswanHuwsmate, DragonPhilljack, swanee, SwanseaCityNo10,.....they are an odd lot those welshies.....hang on I am one myself...but feel no need to vote soccer!
You're right Betty. It really is a wretched looking little group. 4 Micks and 4 Leek-heads. Talk about scraping the barrel! And to top it all off, I posted an impassioned plea on the Celtic Board to get the Jocks on Board, yet the cu*ts came on and voted football! I should have known better than to trust that lot up there. Fu*king haggis faced cu*ts. (I didn't know you was Welsh. I thought you were from Hampshire or somewhere out that direction?)
Deepest apologies to Swords Hoopster and any others I may have inadvertently offended this afternoon. The intention of my comment was muddled by the way in whiich I phrased what I wrote. I should have been more clear, but for whatever reason I, and it, was not. In general, I reserve use of the word "we" to refer to those of us that are posters on this board and who are supporters of QPR. I mucked up this afternoon and used "we" to refer to those that are resident in North America and rightly invited the criticism I received. If I may, the intended response should have been something more like "There are two great sports called football - North American football needs a new name - if it had one we could stop referring to real football as soccer which is indeed the name used here. In fact even North America's premier league (the one from which Mr Beckham has just left) is known as "Major League Soccer" I did, in fact, read most of the posts before I made mine, and I am stating as clearly as I can that my vote goes to "football" This is clarification I make mainly to those North Americans who are unaware that there is another sport called football in most of the world regardless of what name they use to refer to it
POLL CLOSED. Well, there we have it. The people have spoken and those of us in the Soccer camp have been resoundingly defeated. 4 Taffs, 4 Paddy's and one Sweaty was not what I was hoping for when I constructed this poll. Having said that, at just over 16%, it suggests that there is a vocal minority who still cling to that tradition. It is with great regret that not a single Englishman voted for Soccer. There's clearly a lot of work to be done in that constituency to convince the people of the merits and historical importance of the Soccer name. However, that is for another day. Today democracy rules and Football is the choice of the electorate. Many thanks to all who took part.
Pontificate all you like, soccer will never be accepted in the country that brought the world 'Association Football'...
Yeh stick your **** socker in the washing machine ... Football won Footballs too good for you Footballs too good for you Footballs too good for you Footballs too good for you
Fu*k that. I've changed my mind. The fight must go on! As de Valera said just before the outbreak of the Civil War: "The majority have no right to do wrong" We will continue our campaign. Today was not our day but some day it will be. Alea iacta est
Grew up playing soccer with a football. Only in the last ten odd years that I have started to call it football.
