He was not very successful in the Prem, but to be fair to raf he has succeeded where SAF has failed, and beaten top European teams in CL. When SAF finally conquered Juve in 99 they were in disarray, sixth place in Serie a having their worst season for a decade. Ditto Barca 08, 17 points behind real. Rafa beat Chelsea 05 and Milan 05. And a better Barca side than the one SAF parked the bus v in 08. United were humiliated by Chelsea 05 and A similar Milan vintage in 07. They beat a manager less Chelsea in 08, but when SAF has faced it a top Juve Milan Barca and real side he has always got battered. Rafa has done better in Europe v top sides, albeit with a little fortune

he only beat them by playing defensive football and trying his luck.. no wonder it never worked for him since .. Sir Alex was in 3 finals in past 5 years every club can reach last 16.. after that is only about beating 3 sides by sitting back and trying your luck .. look how you did it last year
SAFfa is the greatest ever domestic coach. It's a shame he has never mastered European football and got a United team to dominate the best in Europe. Maybe this year but I think you need a midfield as well as strikers to beat Barca real etc.
Fair point. Given the amount of times we've been in Europe we should have a better return. Personally i think we've been unlucky on occasions.(Scholes goal not given against Porto springs to mind as well as Rafaels sending off vs Bayern). Another reason though is Barcalona being the best club side with the worlds best at the same time.
United have been as unlucky in Europe as Liverpool have been lucky. But they had chances to beat Bayern, Leverkusen in semis and also Real twice in knockout phases too
