Re: Cortese's excellent dealings in the transfer window and in general - was nice to see Southampton at the bottom of amount paid to agents over the summer (and that having bought in a fair few wanted players).

Dead right and I don't think Nicola will spend that kind of money again for a long time. Possibly a common misconception is that Nicola went out with £12m to fiund whatever attacking midfielder he could get his hands on. He didn't - the opportunity to sign Ramirez at acceptable cost came up, and Nicola took it. These players don't grow on trees so there is not much point saying "should have signed another left back", as the deal just did not appear. A lot is said about our transfer spending but it's not one off fees that are important, our wage cost must still be in the bottom three of the Prem. You really would think Cortese was a 15 year veteran of this game.

I don't know how much we will spend in Jan nor do any of us, it could be hardly anything or a lot like in August. All I do know is I'm happy with the way we go about it, buying young players(mostly) that can only get better, instead of the journey men that are after one last pay day.

Most of our players were Championship last year...there could still be other gems out there. Also some players may fit in our team whilst not achieving their best in their present teams. If we go for loans, we may get experienced players who don't quite fit our profile but can do a very good job for us. Adkins is virtually having to pick the same team each week...we need a few more players for when the inevitable injuries kick in.

Blackburn are a midtbale championship team. Do I take it, therefore that you would say no to on form players from other underperforming champinship teams? Tom Ince, Phillips, Bogdan, Butland, Austin, Redmond etc

Judge every player on their own merits and Dann has done nothing to make me dount that he would improve our starting 11. I think we could do much worse than look at the best of the championship at this point in our devlopement and Dann is unquestionably one in that bracket.

Bogdan I don't rate.
Butland I don't really know, he is talented but is letting a lot of goals in and will be stupidly overpriced.
Ince I would like.
Phillips not so sure, did like the look of him but seems to be very inconsistent, which we don't need.
Redmond another one i'm unsure of

The problem with any English player is they are over hyped badly by the press and then end up ****. Then you have the fact English players cost a lot more then a foreign player that could be far better. Ince would probably cost about 7mil which is crazy money.

I think Nigel certainly gets the best out of what he has. Scunthorpe proved that before Saints. Don't agree he's picking the same team every week becuase he has no choice though. We have a big squad. I thin k he's settled in his best starting 11 for now anyway.

Billy Sharp has just celebrated the birth of his new son Leo. Will Billy return for us or are his Saints days numbered?

Billy won't play for Saints again. I felt sorry for him when he left but he's not good enough for the PL.

TBF Tom we don't know that. I'm sure people said the same about Rickie and Le Fondre. Anway more importantly congratulations to Billy and Mrs Billy!

Ok let me rephrase it. Nigel thinks Sharp isn't good enough for the PL. He wouldn't have loaned him out otherwise.

What is it with people bashing Dann constantly. Has anyone actually seem him play this season? (Beef_Dripping, the fact that you dont know his surname suggests you havn't seen an awful lot of him!)

He wasn't the reason his premiership teams got relegated and so to say "no thank" based solely on that is rediculous. There were some big teams sniffing around him when he was at birmingham, where he was excellent, and a friend of mine who is a blackburn fan reckons he has been their best player this season. Hooiveld has looked scarily bad at this level I'm affraid and I still don't ocmpletely trust the current paring.

What's more, he is a good age, has premiership experience and would come wanting to prove that this is his level. He would definately be an improvement on what we already have.

I'm not saying we shouldn't look at other options, with Dawson being a very good one, but I for one would be quite happy with Dann.

Its funny you say this about your Blackburn supporting friend. My old housemate was also a Blackburn fan, so I hear his opinions on all things Blackburn, also I've met quite a few of his mates who support Blackburn. They have pretty differing views on their team (as you would expect) but one thing they all agree on is there are 3 reasons why they got relegated and are doing not great in the Championship - The Venkys, Steve Kean and Scott Dann. I personally have only seen him play a handful of times for Blackburn and he has been unbelievably bad every time, but apparently this is the norm for him. There was even one instance when I was visiting him last season where me and a few of his friends were in a pub near Blackburn watching them on TV (I forget who they were playing), and he was playing terribly I thought, but after the game everyone in the pub was saying that that was his best game as he only cost them 1 goal!

Pretty sure I was saying this in the summer when we were linked with him and got some opposing views, which is fine, after all it is a forum, but the reason he and Roger Johnson looked good for Birmingham was because the system they were playing in was so defensive that you could pick any average Championship CB and play that way and you wouldn't concede many. Effectively it was 10 men behind the ball at all times with 2 DM's in a very narrow formation, if the team is well disciplined then not many teams are going to be able to break you down regularly.

All good points Saintsmagic. Personally when I've seen him he has always looked steady but Blackburn fans are clearly best placed to judge. At the end of the day if Nigel thinks he is worth buying I'm not going to argue! He's not got much wrong so far!

Lampard to QPR would just about be the most surprising transfer in my lifetime.
