Great coup for the county. Does anyone know where in Yorkshire it will actually start? I'd guess at York?
Just googled it and it looks like it's in Yorkshire for two days in July, with the mass start in Leeds. It then goes down south, into France and then finishes in London. Excellent to see it here and I'll make an effort to go, but it's not really the 'Tour de France' is it?
Elizabeth Windsor ‏@Queen_UK Text from Mr Clegg: "The 2014 Tour de France is starting in Yorkshire! Amazing! I didn't even know Yorkshire was in France!" Awkward.
Perhaps it's part of an aid package to a ****hole-type city. Now that Jimmy Saville has gone the way of Revie (dead and disgraced), will it be Mel B doing the honours for you at the opening ? Let's hope she can keep her legs crossed this time- you know what she's like!
It's fantastic news. I think if I remember rightly that first stage would be Leeds to Scarborough when they were submitted the bid. Taking a bit of a detour obviously, including the North Yorkshire Moors which would provide highee category climbs.
Can see it now....Colin ****er leading at the front on a BMX with stabilizers wearing a tight yellow jersey and a cap on sideways. He is a right ****er.
It's a shame those at 'Welcome to Yorkshire' see Harvey Nichols and cheaply clad apartments as key sites to promote Yorkshire over it's grand history. Reading up on it, it won't even enter the East Riding, this despite Hull being known as having one of the highest number of cyclists in a city in the UK. Apparently 'Welcome to Yorkshire' has paid £4million to stage this event in tax payers money, yet looks likely we won't see any of the race enter our part of the county. Peter Levy tried to get it out of Gary Verity (chief exec of Welcome to Yorkshire) earlier on Look North, he just kept saying "you'll have to wait and see" ...sounded like he was basically saying, I don't want to piss on your bonfire just yet. Here is a cycle map of major cycle routes in the UK: http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/cyclemap/Yorkshire It shows 2 main routes in our area - If it does go Leeds to Scarborough, it'd be nice to think the second stage might be Scarborough to Brid-Beverley-Cottingham-Hull/Humber bridge and South maybe to Lincoln (it has to have a southern point as day 3 has to finish in London). Or if it goes through York, it goes the Stamford Bridge-Pocklington-Market Weighton-Beverley-Hull route. Likelihood is more that the first day will just be around Leeds and the second will be around Sheffield, as Welcome to Yorkshire aim to be as predictable and un-creative as possible.
'Welcome to Yorkshire' should just be renamed Welcome to Wessie Land.. we are always marginalised by our Wessie neighbours and having lived in Leeds for 12 years, know full well they think the County revolves around them..thus the reason why I am a Hullite first and foremost whilst Yorkshire comesa very poor second..
When they told Geoffrey Boycott that Yorkshire would stage the 'Grand Depart' of the 2014 Tour de France, he thought they were having him on. Assured by his Test Match Special colleagues that this was indeed the case, he started to warm to the prospect: 'Riding up and down the Dales, it teks some doing, does that.' He racked his brain for a famous cyclist. Then he cackled, wickedly: 'Will that Lance Armstrong be coming?' Very Yorkshire; flattered by being chosen yet not overly impressed. I'm not sure the Great Race knows what it's in for.
Boycott also said in his own way . . it was daft to have the four de france in yorkshire but when asked he would gladly be the starter to wave them off with a flag .
