Reading a few articles today about Fer Ark.. With regards the highest ever attended Man Utd game ; http://www.hull.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=95961#ixzz2F0opn557 "That match also provided the team with one of its nicknames as the "ferrymen" became adopted due to the overwhelming size of the crowd that night. With so many in attendance, ferries had to be used to disperse the crowds as the street surrounding Boothferry Park became clogged with fans." Can't say I've heard it used before.. Have any of you?. either way.. I quite like it.
I've never heard of it and vital's notorious for being a very poor source of information and I can't see how you'd get a ferry down there, unless they mean buses, but would that be notable? However, I'll be happy to be enlightened. On a pedantic note, the last City game at Boothferry Park wasn't Darlington either, it was a reserves game against Barnsley several months later.
very pedantic indeed!.. Remember quite vividly finishing Football training at Eastfield and running down to catch the 2nd half! Always found it an eerie place when Kempton and Bunkers were shut. P.S "The Ferrymen" thing is also on BP's wikipedia.. although it could of been lifted from that article so doesn't confirm too much.
My dad supported City from after the war through to the mid 1990's when he couldn't go anymore due to ill health. In all the years we went to BP together and through all the tales of old he used to tell me (and anyone who would listen) about City's bygone days, he never once mentioned anything about "ferrymen."
Glad it wasnt Barrows they used to disperse the crowds, really wouldnt wanna be known as a Barrowman!!!
We might have been nicknamed the ferrymen, but on that last game, I bet no one else spared a thought and put slices of cucumber down for the ferryman.
Correct. But not 'very pedantic in deed'. I think it was the third of October 2003 when Hull City played the last official game at Boothferry Park. Isaiah Rankin scored twice when they beat us 0-2. I think it was when Ridsdale was running them and they were hoping to be near the end of their admin.
My Dad went to the Man U game and I never heard him mention "The Ferrymen". He did go on about the fact City lost 1-0 but the goal should not have stood, as before the ball was crossed, it went over the dead ball line and was out. nearly 55,000 people saw it, but the ref and lineman didn't.
I was at the Man Utd cup game and many many many more subsequently and I never heard anything about "Ferrymen"
Never ever heard or read about this term regarding the ManU game in all my days as a City supporter I must say...
Ferryman? Perhaps that's why we were so skint . . .
