I hate to tell you this, but your use of a semi-colon was not textbook; the clauses either side of a semi-colon need to make sense in their own right.

A colon would have been perfect though! (Oh God! The grammar police have got me started now too!)

 

But that's where you're wrong; the clauses both side of the semicolon do work in their own right! However you are right, a colon would have been better.

 

It's hard to have a conversation with constant use of a semi-colon; it makes me wonder if there are better ways to spend my life.

The only justifiable use of a semicolon on a football forum is to wink at someone! ; )
