Is joining a group like the Masons or the Orange Order not against the teachings of the Bible?

    Not to my knowledge.

Which teachings in particular are you referring to?

A Welsh guy I worked with was married to a Jain.

Interesting lot. The swastika is a sacred symbol of theirs (not rotated) and this guy's wife had quite strict dietary demands because of it.

They make big statues with the boabies still on them.

...and therein ends my "knowledge" of Jainism.

The New Testament specifically says something about not swearing blood oaths - or not swearing oaths against "the Earth, Jerusalem or thy own head" or some ****.

So, when people say "I swear, by God" it's against the bible's own rules.

The same goes for the bit that always alarmed me as a wee believer - the bit about taking the Lord's name in vain - it says that God "will not find you guiltless" or something.

Which basically means it cannot be forgiven which, in Catholic doctrine, puts it on a par with mortal sins.

Which means (searches distant memories), I think , that if you don't confess said sin, then take communion, you're damned forever on that basis alone.

But, yeah, you're not meant to pledge your life to anything other than God if you're a Christian.

I used to ask my grandfathers what it was all about and they didn't tell me for years.

It was only after my initiation that I finally learnt the truth.

For the record Millhoose, it wouldn't be for you.

    Interesting.

But from what I understand, Masonry is based on the Torah (Old Testament) as there are many references to King Solomon's Temple.

And as far as I know each candidate for initiation is free to chose the Holy Book which is sacred to his own religion.

Why do you think Gambol was so keen to become a mod?

A minimum requirement to become a Freemason is to have been a moderator on an internet forum.

    No modship = blackballed<ok>

It's all about character, being a strong individual and being able to help another member whenever called upon.*

I've seen your picture and you don't look the type of person that would fit in.

    * and also rigging Scottish football matches.

Does Leviticus count as part of the Torah?

So, basically, if you take an oath to hide anything or an oath (for good OR bad) which you don't subsequently confess (or offer a female goat to a priest for <yikes>) is unforgiveable.

But, hey hey, Leviticus bars getting tattoos I think - and some dafties get Christian tattoos <whistle>

On a serious not the reason you are struggling to get an answer is because we are not allowed to tell anyone what goes on or what it's about.

    Kinda like Fight Club.
