Hmm, I wouldn't say it was just sentiment, but I am resisting the change, to some extent. I also think it's healthy to do so. We probably shouldn't limp into the future of our language like sheep, but by the same token nor should we resist the evolution like it was some enemy coming over the horizon.

The thing is, Joe, that language isn't just used for practical purposes, it is also used for poetry as well. Imagery and metaphor often find their way on to this forum to brighten up the statistics and I think that is one of the best things about the forum.

I just got hold of the BBC DVD of "The Hollow Crown", their adaptation of Richard II, Henry IV parts I and II and Henry V. I am not suggesting for a second that we should still speak in Shakespeare's English but it would be a tragedy if we didn't remind ourselves every so often of the majesty of some of those speeches, and how it is possible to convey an idea by a single well-turned phrase, rather than a whole legal document.

Facebook and Twitter users really need to educate themselves. They believe they are talking to their friends, but actually they are broadcasting to the entire online world. Frankly, I'm surprised it was only 800 people.

Great news for the Daily Mail online though. Another way to bash the ordinary person. Find a news item where people are shown at their worst. Gosh, we are just sooooo disappointing..! :)

On another front, this is so heart warming. I have to say, I was utterly charmed by this little girl [cute alert]: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-20426413

Ah, that'll make a change, at least. I'm good at devising curries, pasta sauces and making bread. I also have a couple of bottles of excellent whisky about the place. I'll survive. I'll not be revealing my postcode just in case 800 people want to eat and drink at the same time. Sorry Pepys.

I know you guys have been having a debate about the use of words so I thought you might find this advice helpful:

    NINE WORDS WOMEN USE...

    (1) Fine : This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

    (2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

    (3) Nothing : This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

    (4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

    (5) Loud Sigh: This is not actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)

    (6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

    (7) Thanks : A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome'.. That will bring on a 'whatever').

    (8) Whatever : Is a woman's way of saying...Go to Hell...

    (9) Don't worry about it, I'll do it : Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.
