Just thought I'd share this with you. Anyone who is a Sky subscriber may be interested to hear about the deal I was able to secure. I had the sports package with an HD+ box in the lounge and an additional box (an old, original non sky+ type) in another room, hooked up to an even older, non HD TV. After being bombarded by Virgin, I decided to phone Sky and see if I could obtain a better deal. I told them that Virgin had offered me virtually the same as I have now, but at a cheaper price. This wasn't entirely accurate and in truth I'm very happy with Sky, but times are hard etc!! Anyway, after a few minutes "negotiating" over the phone I ended up with my existing HD+ box being serviced, the additional old box being replaced with the latest HD+ box (I had an HD TV ready for this) and AN ADDITIONAL 3rd HD+ box for another room, all free of charge and have now ended up paying £10.00 LESS PER MONTH THAN I WAS PREVIOUSLY!!!! It really is worth giving them a ring and telling them you're thinking of leaving! (I've been with them for over 10 years, so I think that helped....but there are definitely deals to be had, with Virgin pushing hard to nick their customers).
Its a funny one Rangercol....because it completely depends on who you get on the other end of the phone.....one of my mates range them and managed to get nearly 30% off his bill. I rang them about a month ago, saying I wanted to cancel as it was too expenisve (not the truth but hey) and the lady on the other end said ok then...ill cancel it for you......when I asked about making it cheaper, she told me if I cant afford it, to get rid of the sports, HD and 3D package.....I told her I didnt want to, so she sent me on my merry way. Was a tad embarassed.
On a similar note, last week I moved my phone line to SKY from BT ( I already have my TV and Broadband with them) and its gonna cost £4 LESS a month than what I'm paying now. Shows there are some good deals still out there
I've got the full hd / 3d package. Spoke with them Friday about an issue with our broadband and they said I was entitled to an offer where instead of me paying my normal tenner a month for sky movies they make it a quid for 6 months.
Agree. Rang to downgrade package and got it for half price for six months so kept same package but approx 15 less per month. No harm in asking!
I asked them to take away the HD as the picyure on the TV is so good it is a waste of £10 they said I could have it free for 6 months.
I have found the same before, if you speak to someone at the wrong time of the month you are wasting your time
the technique i think that works is just to claim to be a bit impoverished and to be 'thinking' about removing sports / films or something in a bid to cut monthly costs. Every time i've done (and that's about 3 or 4 over the last 7 or 8 years) i've managed to make some not inconsiderable savings. I think their philosophy is that the more they're seen to be helping you the less likely you are to leave. Plus any money for them, even a reduced monthly fee, is better for them than nothing at all. At any rate - it certainly works!
I will.....im going to wait till Virgin send me through a leaflet saying they will give me a package for a set amount.....I think my lack of success was due to the fact that Virgin wernt offering any deals at that particular moment in time. And Secret, its hardly a fast one trying to get a better deal....saying to Sky that paying nearly £100 a month is expensive is no lie.
Well done, Col et al. There are many stories from acquaintances about free boxes, broadband and packages, which only goes to show just how much money the Murdoch Empire is making out of Joe Public. It would not surprise me in the slightest if they make margins of 80%+ which then enables them to appear generous to "valued customers". Let's not be fooled. Like every other major corporation from BT to just about every retail giant, via the utility companies and the banks, you are held in complete contempt and only serve to line executive pockets with juicy fat bonuses, whilst they hide behind ill-trained Johnny No-Stars that are paid a pittance to hear your gripes. A jaundiced view? Absolutely, because its true. These corporations operate entirely to their own convenience and care not a jot about you and yours. Bunch of ****s.
Your original post implied that you didn't want to cancel in the first place which subsequently backfired on you when they sent you on your way
