did you see the video chico? i'm not racist, i'm just highlighting the minefield, and the anomalies that exist in this big wide world of PC ness. devils advocate again: if they call themselves it how is it racist? are they not being racist themselves deciding that its ok for a black to say it but not white?
So why do ******s call each other ******s?? isnt that racist ? the word ****** was used as a slur to ethnic people so why is it used by rappers all the time? the whole issue is so sensitive in one respect but acceptable in another!
Excellent point to make. If it's acceptable for these ******s to use it should be acceptable for all. Isn't discriminating on the basis of skin colour racist?
Sorry Swamp, that part wasn't aimed at you fella. In answer to your question, I don't know. I guess it's okay to use such words if your from that same race.
But if its acceptable to use words if you come from a certain race only, isnt that racist towards people that dont come from that race ??
Quote right Norway. A white person says the "N" word and they're racist but its ok for black people to say it ? This countries gone to the dogs and the PC brigade aren't the solution but they're always part of the problem. Swamp brings up a good point about Gareth Bale though. It's ok to call him a monkey because he's white but you couldn't if he was black.
absolutely norway. if this term is unacceptable, (and it is), then no-one should be allowed to say it, if some people use it casually without repercussions, it undermines their case that its offensive, and in fact they are themselves discriminating and allowed to pick and choose who can say it without being reported. i'm sure the law says that anyone saying an offensive term should be dealt with, yet as i showed before, i dont think i'd have much success in bringing jay z and kanye west to court!
Ever been to highschool? Notice how the group of unpopular kids call themselves "losers" and "nerds" and are fine with it? But then if an outside group throws the same words at them they are offended? Why is that? Because the context changes. Suddenly its a word to bring them down and reminds them of what they aren't/of them being opressed). The caucasian use of the word has always been a derrogatory, meant to put down a race of people. Black people have since taken back the word, created ownership of a term normally seen as vial, used it as part of their own cultural coloquialism, and in turn made an effort to remove some of the pain associated with the word. That being said, white people have no valuable reason to use the word, ever. Black people have every right to, wether it is used in a positive or negative way. To think anything else discounts the Black historical experience. Part of cultural sensitivity is understanding these types of things from the other person's perspective.
And we are quite well educated people here and we dont have a ****in clue do we... The ignorant uneducated knuckle dragging idiots you get at the football would have no clue on how to navigate the race issue would they? im not saying its right or wrong all im saying is it a world where we are all the same is never going to happen and it gets more difficult to say one thing/gesture/word is wrong when it is widely used by black people to each other all the time, count in the fact that rappers and gangsta rappers have massive popular appeal to all forms of society then it just makes things more difficult doesnt it? a kid from a poor backround who grows up in a poor area and listens to gangsta rappers with his friends of different ethnic backrounds doesnt have a problem with the word ****** as his friends who happen to be black/coloured use it around him all the time!! his hero on the CD uses the word all the time, the heros of his favourite movies use it all the time etc,etc . Im not trying to justify anything here im just say ing its a very difficult issue with the minefield of popular culture and political correctness all mixed in together!! you have the likes of Rio ferdinand calling Ashly cole a "choc ice" but thats fine (ashlys mother is white) . We have accepted many different forms of culture in our country, the UK is probably the most racially harmonised country in the world, i dont really think there is a big race issue i think there is alot of confusion as to what race is nowadays . White people are the best rappers and black people the best Golfers!! nobody knows who is what and thats the way it should be!! How does somebody know what is right and wrong anymore? really?
hey chico, glad to see voices of reason in here. This conversation is just going to descend further into rival trenches i fear. Much as this is about defining racism on the surface, its also about the clubs we support, and when the player and fan are on different sides of that allegiance, balanced debate is going to be hard to come by. Norway, i agree, words will have different powers to different people. When i say that they are based on apocryphal evidence, im referring to the literal meaning. E.g. the welsh shag sheep, or Norfolkians have sex with their sisters. I'm sure there are a number Welsh people who have felt belittled by other cultures such as the English, just as im sure there are a number of Norfolkians who have experienced the same. However recent history suggests the power of those words to do great harm to the recipient culture is less than that of denigrating comments to black people. If i call you a sheep shagger you can dismiss it by knowing that you are not, and that my statement has no basis in truth. If you call a black person a monkey, you are echoing a widely held historic scientific belief (by white people) that due to the higher cranium of some black people, they were close relatives of primates. That assertion was exploited the world over to brand them sub human. And for many black people the 'evidence' that was used to allow that to happen is still with them today. People can still look at them and pick out skeletal differences and use them against them. Thats why i think its not a question of 'growing up' or 'taking it like a man.' Racism is a formidable weapon, which has been used against black people in recent history to devastating effect. When someone however unthinkingly tries to use it, we all owe it to ourselves to make a stand against it. And maybe apply some of that compassion to everyone we meet, regardless of where they come from and what they look like. Sorry this discussion has turned a bit sour after what was a great game, with a great club. I have a lot of respect for Swansea, and wish you the best for the rest of the season.
Great post NJ, and the answer is - We don't. There is no answer. I guess we, as humans, have to make the decision on what is right and wrong, and I think the majority do tbh.
Battersea. No worries fella. Do not let the mindset of some people on here put you off coming by for a chat. You have a great set of fans and are always welcome.
Funny that. They did celebrate in front of the crowd - our crowd. I was at that match and have a photo of our players celebrating in front of us. I have no issue with fans celebrating in front of opposition fans - but when they go over the top then it is incitement.
