We cant afford to let the big man go. He has been phenomenal for us especially in europe away from home.

LIVERPOOL are set to launch a shock move for Georgios Samaras.

Sami is believed to be keen on a £5million switch in the January window.

Kop boss Brendan Rodgers is desperate for a striker — and the Celtic Euro hero is now his top target ahead of Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge. Enquiries have been made about Samaras despite his poor spell at City earlier in his career.

The 27-year-old emerged as an option for Liverpool after his fine performances during Celtic’s run to the Champions League knockout stages.

He has scored in all five of their Euro away games this season.

Greece star Sami is eager to prove himself in England after just 12 goals in 65 games at City following his arrival from Heerenveen in 2006.

Celtic gaffer Neil Lennon will be reluctant to lose the big striker — especially with doubts over Gary Hooper’s future.

Samaras is under contract at the Hoops until 2014, but Rodgers feels he can form a lethal partnership at Anfield with with Luis Suarez.

Rodgers has been left with Suarez as his only fit striker following the injury to summer signing Fabio Borini.

Meanwhile, Sami insists he is not bothered if the soft spot-kick he won against Spartak Moscow should have been given.

The big striker hit the deck against the Russian outfit to land the penalty that saw Kris Commons win the game.

Asked if he thought the ref was right to make the award, Sami said: “I don’t care. It’s finished now.

“We have already forgotten that game and we are now looking forward. The referee made the decision and we respect that.”

Meanwhile, skipper Scott Brown could be sent for surgery on his troublesome hip injury now there is a break in Europe until the last 16 clash in February.

Boss Neil Lennon said: “Scott does not want to have the surgery so we are going to manage him the best we can.

“We can’t force him to have surgery, although eventually our medical team think he will require it.

“It is not like we are soft-soaping him through training now, he is training all the time.

“He obviously had a positive reaction from the last injection and we will just keep going. We need to chat about it.

“If and when the surgery is required we will need to plan the period Scott is going to be out, because we would like him for the last 16 ties.

“I don’t think he would miss the last 16 if he had the operation now. It is an eight-week period of rehab.

“We don’t want to put Scott through what we put him through the last two months.”

Lennon is hopeful Euro success will convince Hooper and Victor Wanyama to sign extensions.

He added: “Gary’s representatives are coming up over the weekend.

“We are hoping we can finally get something done on a positive note, but there is no guarantee.

“With Victor we will keep plugging away with his representatives as well, and see if we can come to a conclusion that pleases everybody.”

I think they just make **** like this up. Also I think Sami is probably one of the only players we have in the squad who doesn't want to move to England. Lenny said himself that he was offered bigger money elsewhere in the past and he chose to stay at Celtic because he's happy.

Whatever happened to that young defender they signed from Rangers?

Looks like another career ruined before it got started due to the lure of the EPL.

That's all well and good but we were talking about Sammy who is far from ****e is he?

Anyhoo, as Mick says the press make **** like this up all the time and Sammy has always loved life at Celtic so why would he want to go to Liverpool?

I hope your right as that kind of striker is not easy to replace and as I said he suits our European tactics. Most players have a price but with samaras it would cost more to replace him than we would likely get in a fee.

To be fair he's played well in the Champions League this season but one good season out of how many at Celtic? It wasn't so long ago fans wanted rid of him for being too inconsistent, a lot of fans also described him as an enigma at some points. He's changed a lot of those opinions this season but how long will it be before he goes back to being the old Sammy?

I think he became much better when we realised he wasn't a goal scorer and moved him wider.

    Well did he type ****e?

True ****e would be the likes of Bob Malcolm and Carl Muggleton. Sammy is very far from ****e but you could not resist overegging the pudding.

"Sami is believed to be keen on a £5million switch in the January window"

Believed by whom? I certainly don't believe it. I've no gripe with Liverpool but why on earth would he go there ... and in January, when he has the opportunity to be in the big window of European football in the following months?

Espania You are totally right. The papers take turns at "believing" various different player wanting out from Celtic. The Scottish
media have their traditional hatred of Celtic, and the English media just cannot believe that any footballer with a grain of ambition
could not want to play in England.
The real situation is that players who have been successful and achieved much with Celtic have almost always achieved less success in
England, if ambitious players only knew they would be much better off at Celtic.
