Hi all, I am going to get a few books sent over from the UK for xmas. I enjoy reading (auto)biographies, it could be from football or any walk of life. Ideas really welcome, thanks in advance...
Some that I have enjoyed Mex: Lance Armstrong - It's Not About The Bike (not very PC, but I don't care!) Tony Adams Barnes Wallace Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader - Reach For The Sky Group Captain Geoffrey Leonard Cheshire Sir Arthur Harris (Bomber Harris) Alan Turing
Cheers W_Y , I might have a look at Tony Adams as I have just read 'Psycho - the England Years' - a good find for $5mx in a second hand book shop here and he mentions Adams a bit.
Full time - Tony Cascarino (who played for Ireland when he shouldn't have) A cricket Pro's lot - Fred Root.
I wouldn't call it a biography but you should read 'The Damned United' it's about the life of Brian Clough. One of the best books I've ever read.
Slightly off the beaten track is "Sold" by Zana Musheen. It is the story of ayoung girl and her sister ( about 14 or 16 I think ) who were taken on holiday by their father to Yemen and sold into marriage and slavery. The elder escaped but I can't remember what happened to the younger sister. It is an extremely well written biography, incredibly moving and eye-opening as to what happens in the very recent past. I could not put it down.
It's written by David Peace, I don't know why, but you feel as if you are Brian Clough, and how brilliant he was. Definitely worth a read
'Provided you don't kiss me' - Duncan Hamilton (also about Brian Clough) 'Harold Larwood' - Duncan Hamilton 'My Father and othe Working Class Football Heroes; - Stuart Imlach all excellent sports biographies.
Beat me to it theo. I was going to say if there is one book to read get, 'My Father and other Working Class Football Heroes; - Stuart Imlach The best football book I have read this year.
Living the Dream : My Story - Chantelle Houghton. It's difficult to believe she was just 23 when her autobiography* was released. Inspirational. *Autobiography [aw-tuh-bahy-og-ruh-fee, -bee-, aw-toh-] noun, a history of a persons life told by them
Or, any of the below: You Only Live Once - Katie Price A Whole New World - Katie Price Being Jordan - Katie Price Pushed to the Limit - Katie Price
Racing Through the Dark-David Millar(cyclist). Zeitoun-David Eggers-true story of a guys arrest & dentention in post-Katrina New Orleans.
probably as interesting as Jason Mcateer's signature which probably reads.... X Thanks for the recommendations guys, much obliged, I'll see what my Sis can russtel up and send over in the snail.
She had better get a shift in if you want them in time for Christmas Mex. Which reminds me - I have stuff that needs to go the other way. I am going to a gun show on Sunday so perhaps a Sig-Sauer would be a gift that keeps on giving. It's fairly light so the postage wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.
i don't read them myself but Mr H loves them..he recommends 'Serious' by John McEnroe...says it's one of his favs...
Roald Dahl's 2 biographies are amazing (he added some stuff so it's not 100% accurate) Definitely worth a read!
