The Big Issue -Joey Barton: "Israel and Palestine is tit-for-tat violence" Columnists - Dec 4, 2012 Joey Barton: "In the Israel-Palestine conflict, the leaders of each side really need to man up" We have to support the most powerful at all times, donât we? If I was to tell you those innocent children, women and men were being killed in Gaza because of a largely interpreted book that was written more than 2,000 years ago, would you really believe me? This is actually something I would probably tweet in jest, yet when I did give my opinion on Twitter about Israelâs atrocities I was told to get back in my box. The problem is, not only are there not too many boxes that I can fit in, but also that this issue needs to be discussed and challenged by as many people as possible in order to stem a battlefield response, and put an end to this madness. So there are a group of Jews out there, with extreme beliefs, that think the Old Testament is all fact, which means that Israel belongs to the Jews and the Palestinians must give all of the land back to them, as this book is, of course, the law. Now, come on, if someone turned up at my house and said that they had found a book saying my house belonged to them, I would have my lawyers rip them a new arsehole. Now, Israel was created in 1948. Okay, the state of Israel, before you jump on your high horses again. It had been governed by Britain but was given to the Jews. The area is surrounded by pretty hostile Arab territory, so they kill a load of Arabs in order to let them know who is boss. If I was an Arab I would be pretty pissed off at this, but then again the Jews needed a homeland after the Holocaust and so they were supported financially by the Americans to fight their corner against hostile forces in the region. Now the United States has been largely supportive of the Jewsâ fight in Israel over the years, but letâs have it right. This has simply gone on for too long. Every time peace talks occur the situation worsens. Seriously, what are they doing in these rooms? Someone needs to be brave here. There have been situations with mass hatred, and Northern Ireland strikes me as one, as does South Africa, where there have been brave leaders on both sides that have allowed each to come through the other side. I look at these two feuding and the violence perpetuated and wonder when it will all end. Both are in the wrong, but even when researching it seems there is propaganda behind every Palestinian attack as a major terrorist attack, but the Jews are chucking settlements on the Arabsâ land and persecuting them. So what is the answer? Build a wall across the place â that way you cut out suicide bombings. What genius thought that idea up? It beggars belief in the modern day. Segregate them, so they hate each other more and the hatred bubbles into the next generation. Now, I have read of and seen the atrocities, albeit through said propaganda, and I still cannot see the clear answer. However, I can clearly see what is not the answer. It is not the answer to read one side of the story. It seems at times to be tit-for-tat violence. However, it is the leaders of each side that really need to man up. Not be worried about them being attacked and having the âMy gun is bigger than your gunâ approach. Instead, they need to sit down and man up to get themselves out of this situation. Not be afraid of losing their own power at the risk of countless lives. I do not see how the Israelis can have a right to defend their land because a book, which the jury is still out on, said so. There are Israelis living in areas that they have travelled halfway across the world to live in, in order to protect âtheirâ land, which really is insane. When I made these comments on Twitter it was said that I was anti-Semitic. How ridiculous is that? But there will always be these idiots out there, quick to jump to hate because I do not agree with their take on it. In the meantime, I hope with all my heart that someone comes up with a solution. As I write this piece there has been a ceasefire. Both sides are claiming they have won. And, you know what? There is a ceasefire, so maybe they both have won... Joey Barton plays football for Marseille. @joey7barton The Big Issue
I really hate this bloke! He's just happened to stumble on the truth on this one but I don't think anybody with half a brain will take what a convicted thug has to say on such things seriously.
Mmmm.... lectures on international politics from Joey Barton. Middle England loves a 'council house intellectual'..... Cue article in the Daily Mail.....
I seriously believe Barton doesn't even know where Palestine is ! He is mixing it all up with Plasticine as some gay people now wear underwear made of this clay ... During wild disco dancing men have been known to press their privates into the backside of another dancer ... It certainly makes an impression !!!
Enough of your Brighton Club scene already!! P.S. If you see Shefford down there, tell him we miss him.
I don't think anyone will take the Old Testament as literal truth - giants, big boats with 2 of each animal on etc???? He says that everything is propaganda that he sees through but surely there's a chance, a CHANCE that he's putting his own subjective opinion in as fact because all his research failed to support his view. I get the impression that Israel acts the bully with it's big brothers stood behind it but stress that this is just my opinion. He completely misses the point that Jews aren't from half a world away but have a claim to Jerusalem. The Muslim's have an equally valid claim to it though. It's probably less about religion and more about a long standing land-ownership issue but I've done less research than the insightful Joseph Barton so what would/should I know.

With respect Matt but your second line contradicts your first. And there are in fact plenty of people that take these fairy stories as fact. I visited a Creationist museum in Kentucky a few years ago in which they had (I kid you not) a life-size child riding on the back of a Velociraptor. Most Muslims take the quran and other hadiths literally and believe that the prophet Muhammed used to get around on a flying Donkey. These are the sorts of simpletons you're dealing with. And when you throw an illegal stealing of land - like the Zionists did in '48 - into the mix, you're left with an almost impossible situation. Not only do you have to sort out the actual problem but you're dealing with two groups of people with the minds of a child. Not until you educate people and shine light upon their ignorance will they be able to think clearly and be able to solve problems for themselves. Asking Joey Barton to educate us on such matters is like asking Danny Dyer to explain the theory of relativity.
You got me there Swordsy! I suppose my point, from my position of ignorance, is that the motives for the tension appear to have been blurred over time to the point where both sides are fighting on principle. There is also a case of the West being unwavering in its support of Israel while the majority seem to always assume (unsubstantiated) that there's a hidden agenda. I'd guess the truth sits in a grey area but, as I say, I'm not very well read on a subject that seems to be strangely emotive on all sides.
Joey really needs somebody to shut him up For him to say "So there are a group of Jews out there, with extreme beliefs, that think the Old Testament is all fact" is ridiculous Every religion believes in facts from a long time ago with nobody knowing if they are true or not
Is he trying to help, or just stir up more resentment and anger on both sides? His half-truths about who started what and why seem to be echoed in this thread. Jews took large expanses of desert land and turned them into a thriving economy, built the infrastructure to support a modern country and developed a homeland for the people. The nomadic people who also peacefully occupied the land fled because they heard the guns being cocked by all the neighbors around the State of Israel. This was the most neutral description of the area history and conflict I could find: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/a-brief-history-of-palestine.html You know why there hasn't been a lasting peace? Because there has never been a Palestinian leader that survived long enough to enforce it on their "extremist brothers". The West Bank area is a disaster, not as bad as the Gaza Strip, but bad. Jordan, who had originally control over both areas, abandoned them because they wanted nothing to do with the inhabitants. They don't support them because they don't want them. I thought all those Arabs were brothers?
Jordan gave the area of land that is now known as the West Bank to the Palestinians when the Israelis took the land, so they would have somewhere to live. Israelis are building on land that Jordan gave to the Palestinians.
The I/P situation can never be resolved when one side consider the other to be a different species, animals, placed on this earth to serve them. That's one giant step beyond your everyday common or garden racism. Insane.
Having spent a few years out there and spoken to many people on both sides I was amazed at the hatred and mistrust both sides have for each other.
Of course it would have to take an American ignoramus to come on and post such drivel and outright lies. What is it with the good ole U S of A and its unwavering support for Israeli terrorism and occupation? Your Countries despicable support of Israeli gangsters has poisoned the whole Arab World against you and the only thing I can't understand is why there haven't been more 9/11 style attacks - disgusting and all as they were. The Palestinians who lived in Palestine, who's parents, grandparents etc who had all lived there were forcefully driven from their homes and made into refugees, which they remain to this day. Then people from all over the World who had absolutely no right to do so, took their land and settled there. The injustice is horrendous and the Palestinians have been forced to live in a huge concentration camp ever since. The fact that you dozy yanks can't get your heads around that and other stuff like it, is the reason your Country is hated throughout the World. The last person in the World to give a lecture on justice and equality is an American.............................and Joey Barton. Let me guess, you voted for Mitt the TIT?
They gave them the land they were given control over so that the Palestinians would not enter Jordan itself. Like I previously stated, the Jordanians wanted nothing to do with the Palestinians, then or now. After the 1973 war, Israel took control over the entire area and gave some of the land back as part of one of the numerous Peace Plans, after settlements had begun. Many Israeli homes were abandoned in the pullback.
9 Countries voted against Palestine becoming a 'non-member observer state' Can't remember exactly who but US, Israel and Canada are biggest names, there were 4 pacific islands, an eastern european country and can't remember last. On the other hand, over 140 countries voted for it. Hmmm.
Right to the "Merica bashing. Stay classy Swords... Nice touch throwing 9/11 too. Quite a personality definer right there. Didn't you read the whole post and follow the link? It couldn't be more clear. The Palestinians abandoned the land, they weren't ejected. A large segment of modern Israel is Arab. How do you explain that? Your people and government might be happy living alongside Islamic law, permitting the religious courts to run parts of your country and dictate how the local population should live. But there are still some parts of the world that want a Western life with freedom of religion, culture and an open society. Why the strong alliance with Israel? They see things the same way we do.
