It's been reported that the nurse who took the hoax call from two Australian DJ's has taken her own life! I hope there are repercussions in the Antipodes! Read it HERE
Seems like a huge over-reaction. I know that those DJ's were pulling a stupid prank but there is no way they could have anticipated such a disproportionate reaction from the victim. Sorry to hear that this has happened but there must be more to this than a simple mistake that could have happened to any of us at work.
This is absolutely shocking. Yes, breaching patient confidentiality is wrong but bloody hell if the Queen rings you are hardly going to question it are you. Hang on Liz can I call you back? I fear that the hospital penpushers have laid into this poor woman and a genuinely decent person has been pushed to this tragic end.
Absolutely shocking! I just hope that the authorities down under take immediate action to ban these morons from ever broadcasting again. A joke can backfire and have serious unintended consequences and it may have just tipped this dedicated nurse over the edge. A poor family will be without its mother just on top of Christmas.
As you know I am a lecturer in healthcare at UEA and myself and my nursing colleagues are saddened and shocked by this. Today I was at a local school promoting our healthcare professions and we used this link to promote nursing. To the two Aussies reporters, watch this; http://www.rcn.org.uk/newsevents/news/article/uk/nursing_career_film_shown_at_rcn_congress
How can you say it is disproportionate when nobody knows the details of what this nurse had to go through?
What a stupid comment. Can you imagine the pressure she would have been under from her employer, professional body and the media. She would have worried about being struck off, suspended, not being employable...etc. if she was already under pressure the intense speculation would have been intense.
I'd agree that there was no way the DJ's could have anticipated this. I have a much bigger issue with the fact they were enquiring about something which was potentially very sensitive, if her pregnancy had miscarried for example, it would have been broadcast live (as I assume it was). That was the part which was distasteful and could have be forseen.
Fed up with being bored by the Royals.Would like to think the large amount of tax I pay (Willingly I might add,not like Starbucks) went to do something more useful for society than perpetuating an achronistic system.
I think culture and history are worth preserving, the Royal Family is part of what makes Britain different. I don't really carry any interest in them but others do and it is part of our image abroad to the tourists. And alot of countries would kill for our Royal history.
I think that the Media highlighting the hospital actions was wrong. The pranksters should have been ridiculed for the prank itself.
Agreed the nurse made a mistake, but the media made such a deal of it became too much for her. A nurse probably does that everyday, unfortunately for this woman the pressure from the media means this mistake was too much for her to take. As said above, if she thought the Queen has genuinely rang up, which wouldn't be out of question baring in mind a relative is a current patient, you're not really going to have the same rational, professional head you have on the rest of the time. I don't like the Royal family particularly, which is a different matter, but even I would probably be shocked if I answered the phone and she was on the line. I still think the radio station trying to get confidential information about a patient is far worse than what the poor nurse done, yet the media didn't ridicule them. Feel sorry for her family.
Be interesting to see how her bosses handled it...also if there had been pressure into how they handled it from Clarence house. More blood on the hands of the media than the DJs for me...
It was such a rubbish imitation that only a non native English speaker would be fooled by it.But similarly a foreigner probably takes it much more seriously.I do think the secondary media have a lot to answer for.Really this was pretty much a non story until they ran with it.
