If Huw and co have already decided to expand the stadium, I think we can safely assume that there is no way a new stadium will be built within the next 20 years. The only thing that could change that is Champions League football. Finish top 4 for a few seasons running and we'll get a purpose-built stadium. But have a few seasons where we're mid-table, and we won't even fill 32,000. So getting in debt for a new stadium now would be stupid. Huw has run the club within its means for many years now and most fans appreciate this. To suddenly change course and borrow a huge amount for a new stadium would be pretty risky. Huw's not even sure we can afford to expand the tree sides at the same time, so there is no way he's even thinking about a new stadium. I think we'll eventually buy the Liberty from the council. I also think having a stadium nearer the city centre is better because it brings some fans into town, and this is good for the economy. If the stadium was out town, then they might not bother. We shouldn't be encouraging people to travel by car. A stadium near a rail line is better, and what we need is a train station at the Liberty.
I agree completely this is what I said I ain't a Swansea fan and ppl will say its a wum but I'm a rugby boyo too and speak as I find!!! The council won't allow another stadium to be built These are the options in my opinion They buy the stadium and agree Ospreys can be tenants! (Own Stadium but Shared) with Extension...which you don't want They won't allow you to build your own and leave a 21,000 seated liberty to house the ospreys for a mer 8,000 fans it's common sense!!! So the only other option is too, buy the Liberty Stadium off the council and expand that and as your doing so build the ospreys a small. 10,000 seated stadium...surely it's cheaper
The Swans (we for the pedantic) can do what the University did and build a stadium outside the city boundary. In any case, even if they council said no, they have to have proper ground to disallow it. Just saying there is already another stadium isn't a legitimate reason to turn down another stadium. They would be overruled in any court case. And if they don't want two stadiums, the can knock down the Liberty and build something else there. Just because there's a stadium there now doesn't mean there always will be. Neath Port Talbot would happily say yes to a stadium.
But its not just the planning permission for the stadium, its the land as well, we must own that to develop it, that would probably cost the amount we are spending on the extension to begin with. So if for example we bought the felindre site there is no guarantee that we can get the permission to build. The only viable option is the liberty its there and I suppose we might have an option to buy the site at some point, though that maybe wrong.
I'm not on about now im on about the future. there is plenty of private land about and who wants to plough millions into something we will never own.The liberty is for the people of swansea to be used by everyone and not just the swans and the ospreys so you can forget about ever owning it outright because there are to many associations who use the stadium and they are trying to get more to use it.... I'm on about eventually breaking away from all that when it is financially possible in a few years time and instead of subsidizing everyone else because that is what we will be doing as we are the ones with the money that the club has worked very hard for and end up spending millions of pounds towards something we will never own is bad business.....And don't forget that's what we are a business at the end of the day and we should make money and not throw it away...
The thing is though Dai, we're currently missing out on millions in missed revenue that the expansion will bring. I take your point about us paying and the council getting the benefit, but it's about the benefit to us it ticket sales at the moment and I'm sure the club's accountants have done the maths before going ahead
I didn't see your post Aber. What was it saying ? Perhaps we should just buy the Liberty outright. Then we can so what we want to it and that includes leasing it to the Ospreys.
as a temporary measure then expanding it to 30k is ok as it wont cost that much and we can make most of that back while we are making plans for the future assuming we can stay in the premiership for the next 3 years and beyond...but eventually i want to break away and go it alone and make money for the club to progress even further....there is coming a time when it will get to expensive to go to the liberty but if we were at our own stadium and the club has invested wisely then ticket prices would fall as the attendance would not be such a big issue for the growth of the club..I think that football clubs and their prices will come to a head in the next 5 to 10 years and if they dont make plans now for the future then a lot of clubs will go to the wall. there is only so much financial input that the fans can take and its getting very close now that the only time fans will be able to support their clubs is in their armchairs watching on the TV....A lot of these big clubs nowdays are investing in other things like hotels etc....There is a far bigger risk of clubs going to the wall if they dont do something for the future than if they dont do anything at all....
what post aber? didnt see it and as chico is sick doubt any mods would have removed it. anyway back to the topic, surely swansea need a bigger stadia as mentioned many times, whether its paid for buy the swans or 50/50 with the council. why miss out on 12000 fans revenue every fortnight
