A nice light hearted thread on the origins of our not606 names (and any previous aliases) I wanted to originally go with a reference to one of my favourite all time players, Reuser or Stewart but at the time someone was using 'Rolls Reuser' so I went for another fave of mine... Super David Johnson. I remember in some of my early visits to PR the chant "He is the King of Portman Road" directed to our (original) DJ.. I even saw him a couple of years ago in Sheffield but was too nervous to speak to him What are the stories behind everyone else's names?
Nice idea KPR. I recall those heady days of Reuser and co. Although brought up on a farm in Suffolk and lived there for 25 years, worked in many parts of the globe, I am now South Coast based, and belong to one of the worlds oldest & largest old sailing boats association, named Old Gaffers, which of course describes the Gaff Rig on these lovely beauties. Most of mine I have owned and sailed I have bought in Suffolk and sailed down here. One of my passions in life...after ITFC of course!
I saw Warky make his debut against Leeds in the FA Cup 5th round replay in 1975 as a 17 year old. When he finally broke into the first team as a regular 2 years later he became my absolute hero. The best box to box midfield player of his generation without a doubt. The knack he had for making late runs into the box to score was just pure magic! He scored 36 goals in 1980/81 season from midfield and set a European goal scoring record in the Euefa Cup. An all time Ipswich legend and I have met him socially many times, he is a top bloke. Oh and I have a moustache to match that of my hero.
When I was younger I was with my friend at his grandparents house which happens to back onto the ITFC training ground. A ball came over the fence and we tried to return it. Instead, Richard Wright apologised, signed the ball and let us keep it and even gave me some GK gloves! Obviously it was only a small gesture but he was always a hero of mine ever since! My last name is also Wright so it seemed appropriate
Big Alan Hunter was a boyhood hero of mine, when we got to Wembley for the '78 Final it was touch and go whether he'd make the game which was an additional cause for concern to my 14 year old self as I'd made a banner for the game which read "Big Al reigns on Plastic Mac".He duly played and had Malcom(Plastic Mac)McDonald in his pocket all afternoon.
I started out on 606 as IpswichTownLondoner. It seemed appropriate to communicate my location because it had a big bearing on the games I took in as well as the fact that I used to sport the strip in an all-Ipswich-Town five a side team once a week at Mile End stadium, we would commandeer any number of pubs to watch games on and I even chose where to live based on the location of the old Suffolk Punch pub in Finsbury Park. I felt we were representing the club for the capital. Then I moved away from London after six years in 2009 so extended my name to reflect my new location. Since then I've lived temporarily in Ashton-Under-Lyne near Manchester before semi-settling here near Leeds as well as a very brief spell (2 months) in Southampton and (2 weeks) in Glasgow.
Unfortunately, i don't have stories of meeting past town players like Warky and Wrighty...mine is simply from the fact that i'm a tall fella, and was nicknamed stretch in my younger days, with one particular person making a habit of calling me stretchyboy!!
Speaking of names has anyone heard anything from Guru? He hasn't been on here for ages so I hope he is ok!
My id - quite obvious. Tractor boy from being a town fan. Bhoy from following Celtic north of the border. Luckily fairly similar so I moulded them into 1. Stretchy - how tall are you? Im 6ft4 and nobody has ever decided to use my height as part of a nickname.
If you look on his profile, you can see he still looks in from time to time, just not posting for some reason!
Originally ipswichinamsterdam, because I lived in Amsterdam and it made sense to show I was on tour. Changed it to connorsgonnatrick'em for a while, a play on words of Connor Wickham (made after his solo run and goal) and now simply San Diego to rub all you ****ers who live in dreary ol' England noses in it.
Pershore, Because this is where I now reside, though from Suffolk. JWM, I remember going to Leicester to that game. My old man was all for turning the car around when he learned that warky was playing(& he is a Scotsman, my dad as well as warky) Bigal, that day in May must have been one of the best days ever!
I thought Warky had a great debut considering the quality of the opposition that day. I will always remember Big Al saying after that game that he had threatened to sort Allan Clarke out if he spat at Warky again!
