Now the Scots have decided it is time for a change in the structure of their leagues should we be doing the same? I was thinking that we should have a small premier league made up of 5 teams selected by SKY and that would probably be: Man Utd, Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool. They could all play each other twice at home and twice away as they do in the SPL and that would leave the rest of us, the real football supporters, to get on with watching a League made up of a first, second and third division. How it used to be before football was corrupted forever by Murdoch's money.
And a 4th division, remember. Add a 6th team to your elite 5 and then we can have promotion and relegation between the leagues and even number divisions throughout.
Oh, the old "real" football supporters argument. Quips like this just make people sound bitter and jealous. What happens if Saints become successful? Will you stop supporting us?
Some people may be forced to, due to cost. My season ticket went up from £375 to £575 this year. My son, despite my best efforts to persuade him otherwise, is an arsenal fan, but can't often afford to watch them play. I know a lot of gooners in that position.
this argument comes up a lot on this forum. surely everyone else must get a buzz when a big team comes to town. there's no greater feeling than doing a david v goliath against a team at the top. i cheered a lot more at the steven davis goal v man city than the rickie lambert goal v norwich
The problem with Scottish Football rests with having too small Leagues, that really needed more competitive teams duking it out, instead of two elite sides (now reduced to one). Too much tinkering only led to a worsening of the situation. At least there are half a dozen teams having a battle at the top of the Scottish Premier, more competition should encourage more spectator participation. There doesn't seem to be many Scottish players coming through into the English Leagues, you cannot tell me that there aren't any capable players that would do a good job in the Premier, that are currently playing in Scotland, is recruitment a fundamental problem, why are Scottish youngsters not breaking through? Too many overseas players perhaps? I would be interested in anyone elses views on the problem.
Because you could walk through Glasgow for a week and not see a single kid playing on the street or in a park. Something is badly wrong in that respect and it isn't just a lack of suitable space to play as Scots don't tend to go in for abiding by rules and "keeping off the grass". It's something that has puzzled me for years.
I said I would never pay Murdoch when the PL started, said it would ruin English football. 2 decades on it has ruined English football and I kept my word on not paying Murdoch any money. You guys paying £40+ for Sky must be rich. I will never stop supporting Saints though, just not going to help finance the Premier league. A shirt and a few tickets each season is my only contribution.
Is football ruined? I still enjoy it. I will still have Sky even when I am fully retired...I enjoy it so much I'd live on cornflakes to have it. However, it's different if you have a family...for some reason kids like regular meals Going back to Godders point...the league would actually consist of ManU, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool plus 'whatever club Redknapp is manager of'.
I am neither bitter nor jealous I have seen enough of Murdochs PL and of the old Football Legue structure to know which I prefer.
Too simplistic. Sky wasn't at fault for Hillsborough (and thus destroying decent atmospheres at grounds). Sky wasn't at fault for shoddy grass-roots development. Sky has faults, sure. But I don't think it is solely to blame. Anyway, we still have the most exciting league in the world and our fair share of the best players. I just don't see it as an either/or situation. We don't know how the English game would have developed without Sky to make a comparison.
I'd reorganise the leagues of English football so that each division (at least down to the Conference) had an equal number of teams with equal relegation/promotion spots but that's mainly down to my slight OCD.
