ON THE RIGHT in Rafas early days, with Sissoko/Hamman Alonso at CM AS A SECOND STRIKER, behind Torres in Rafas later years Not as a CENTRAL MIDFIELDER Just sayin.................. When Suarez is back we need to play Stevie in the front 3 , on the right
He could have played RW yeah.... before his injury. This has brought up so much, but frankly he doesn't have the pace for a winger and he doesn't have a Torres-esq striker in front of him either. We have to either play him as a CAM and accept he's going to be slower than he was, and have players run around that. Or, he's going to have to drop back to CM and dictate the play. Whatever happens, I don't think its wise to play him in every game anymore. His efficiency drops, he gets complacent and tired. We've seen it all happen before.
I'd like to see us try it seeing as our wingers are more attacking midfielders and attack the box now other than running wide, I'm not saying I'm right but getting SG in and around the box may get us goals.
At this stage in his career then there are 2 positions for Gerrard to play IMO. Either as a deep lying CM alongside Lucas or 'in the hole' behind a pair of strikers.
Never thought Gerrard had the tactical discipline to be a deep lying playmaker, and I doubt he'll develop it at this stage in his career. But completely agree with you about playing him in the hole. Have never understood why neither Rodgers or Dalglish tried to use him there - if he played behind Suarez and another then he'd still be able to get into the channels, and that would create more space for the strikers and allow Suarez to drift out wide more. And with three CMs behind him you wouldn't need to worry about him being caught out of position, which is pretty much inevitable for a 32 year old who still drives forwards at almost every chance he gets.
Kenny certainly wanted to play him behind Carroll and Suarez but for all sorts of reasons was only able to do so for 3 complete games during last season. Rodgers has not had the possibility at all!. When I suggested a deep lying CM, I didn't mean to suggest a playmaker role (though his long range passing would be useful). I had in mind the more disciplined role that he undertook in the Euros.
totally agree, not sure he's got the engine to do that work now though. rafa basically got the best out of gerrard and also knackered him by never ever resting him. I really don't know what to do with him bar right side in the front 3 in this rodgers system. I think in a 4-3-3 you can't have an attacking midfielder only who never tracks back. this is why fat frank is no longer playing first team cos while he just loses it then heads fo rthe box he wasn't getting back any more. Gerrard hasn't been getting into the box or tracking back enough (consistently)
Playing in the hole requires a hell of a lot of movement to become available. Gerrard can't dart around constantly anymore which is why we see him dropping deeper into midfield to pick up the ball.
I reckon he should be happy to start frankly. rodgers needs to figure out where best to play him cos right now he's not getting that IMO. false 9 is ok whatever, i agree suarez rights side is his very best poistion but i think surez is better at flase 9 than gerrard.... the fact is how many passes has suarez got from gerrard to make a chance? misses or no.
