You'd have loved him if he'd joined us instead of Blackburn ..

I don't know what his scoring record was like in European football for Newcastle but I don't get not putting him up there with the best number 9's ever.. For me his was a classic striker, held it up well, could link up play score with. Oth feet and his head and scored a lot at all levels. Do t know what more he could do. Not saying he was the all time greatest in the world but possibly top ten of number 9's surely.

  2. There was debates that he was the greatest in the world at one point. Problem was, his competition for that tag was Batistuta and Ronaldo (fat Brazilian) who were both a league above IMO

That's the point though, he didn't join us. Or indeed anyone. He stayed all cosy at a minow club.

I always admired his flat out goal scoring ability but he had that flat track bully feel to him as outside of the premier league and Newcastle he was **** all.
Even Lineker had a major impact on two world cups.

    Shearer never did.

I would lay money that the truth is he's gutted with his own lack of ambition and success.

There have been some great number 9's loved batistuta .. Loved George weah. Vialli in his day.. Van basten. I'm not saying shearer was better than them.. But I think he was on the same page..

You're taking the piss now, van Basten was on a different planet, let alone page.

  6. Sorry, Shearer was quality but he was not the same level as them!

All I'm saying is that I think shearer would be in the top 10 ish.. <ok>

I want to have a go at doing my top 10 number 9's but really can't be arsed..

    Ronaldo
    Van basten
    Batistuta
    Romario
Gets trickier after these for me.
You have people like platini, klinsman..

Shearer is still second top scorer in the euros.

Platini certainly wasn't a centre forward but that's me being picky.

His goal scoring ability is not in doubt, it's the term 'great' I'm objecting to and purely because his lack of, well, greatness.

He never scored a **** load in a world cup winning side like Paulo Rossi. Or Ronaldo.
He just didn't win enough. He scored a load of goals for his home town team and that's his achievement.

    So did Malcolm MacDonald.

This is the thing though in the debate of greats.. Lots of greats never did it on the world stage.. Everyone twists the rules to suit their viewpoint on a player.

Some people on here have said that for messi to be remembered as being as good as maradonna he has to do it for Argentina. Then you get people saying international football is s hit and it doesn't matter.

We all say George best is one of the all time greats not just in his position but in general.. But he did **** all internationally.. Drogba hasn't either. But I'd say drogba holds his own alongside some of the names mentioned ..

Anyone who says Messi needs to do something internationally to justify his greatness is a lunatic.

And you've got to consider the countries that Best and Drogba play for before bringing in the international factor, same with Giggs in that respect.

The thing with Shearer in not being considered one of the greats for me is that he won one thing his whole career, had no impact whatsoever outside of domestic football and didn't attempt to challenge himself on that higher level.

It can't be argued he's the best premier league striker as his record speaks for itself but outside of that, what's his legacy? He didn't influence Newcastle into achieving anything at all, nor England and you can't really say he was the magic ingredient to Blackburn winning the league, he was one of a few.

I've nothing against the bloke to be perfectly honest but if I was asked about the great strikers of football he wouldn't cross my mind until I'd considered loads of others.

Disagree with that - Henry was a better PL striker imo - more prolific with bags of assists to boot, and was the main reason for Arsenal's success in the first half of the 00s. Also delivered for Barca and France. For me Henry actually is one of the great strikers.

Agree with all the rest tho.

Yeah Henry is definitely up there as an all time great in my opinion.. But he was not a standard number 9. Hence not mentioning him.

I understand what everyone is saying about shearer but to doubt the blokes ability against some of the best number 9's the world has had based on the fact he was happy playing for his hometown club is nonsense. The guy scored against whoever was in front him. He wasn't a game changer type player in the sense of a creator. But the bloke scored with both feet his head and free kicks..

Torres is a great false 9. Or am I misunderstanding what a false 9 is?

Torres was the greatest striker, player and all round gentleman in the history of forever. Then he made the mistake of leaving LFC. Now he is and always will be utterly ****.

I'd have thought as a Liverpool fan you would have been informed of this?
