Very true. Ironically enough, England's best midfield formation of the past decade would probably have been Carrick and Scholes in CM with Gerrard on the right or in a free role behind Shearer then Rooney. Instead we got Scholes on the left wing, Carrick on the bench and Fat Frank and Gerrard perennially in each other's way.

Edit- thought you were comparing his record to Carrick.

Compared to Shearer his record is colossal!

Thats what I thought. Just a player who scored goals. Never really helped his team do **** all ( bar the heavily backed Rovers in 95 ).

I'd put shearer up there with the best strikers this country has produced..

Likewise. Although being one of England's greatest strikers doesn't necessarily qualify you as a great player, and Shearer has been overshadowed in the PL by players like Henry and Cantona, and arguably ones like Bergkamp and Zola who were nowhere near as prolific, but had a much bigger impact on their teams' success.

    Yeah, like Owen and Lineker.

Neither of whom were great players.

You tend to find that out an out strikers don't have a massive impact on the game, they just put away their opportunities.

They're there to score and the best ones do just that. To compare the likes of shearer, Owen, cole, lineker to the more creative players like cantona, bergkamp is like comparing Keane to scholes.

For me the best goal scorers are the ones that do it against other top teams. Shearer, Owen, lineker all scored at all levels of the game. You can't ask anymore of them in my opinion.

So I would put shearer up there with the best goal scorers the world has produced. I'd also say the best proper number 9 would be the Brazilian ronaldo.

You can't really say the top premier league goal scorer isnt a great can you?

The man could put the ball in the net for pleasure, if ever the chant "he scores when he wants" was applicable surely it is for Shearer.

I agree. Definitely a premier league great.

I wonder what his reputation is like overseas though? As he rarely made an impact in European football with Newcastle or Blackburn.

Look at Antonio Di Natale, people only really found out about him after Udinese played Arsenal last season or two seasons ago even though he had been banging goals in for fun throughout his whole career in Serie A.

European football is the stage most players are judged on nowadays. That's why Ibrahimovic's reputation suffers and Zidane/Gerrard/Messi/Xavi/Kaka/Scholes/Drogba etc have such huge reputations, because they've performed in the CL when it matters.

I think if Shearer had joined a different team he might have had more of an impact in Europe but we will never know. (i don't mean any disrespect to Newcastle)

Being a great of your respective leagues is different to be a great of world football i guess.

I thought shearer was class. I'd have loved him to of played for us. He turned us down twice the c unt.

For me he is right up there with the best.

NOF take some laxatives it will sort that right out <ok>

Aye, but that for me is why the best teams rarely have out and out strikers, or rarely make them the focus of their team. Shearer, Owen, Fowler, Wright, Lineker, Torres (for a time), and RVN were all great strikers, but didn't cause their teams to win all that much.

The best teams tend to have attackers who contribute more to the team like Cantona, Yorke, Bergkamp, Henry, Rooney, Drogba, Ronaldo, RVP etc. Cole is one of the few exceptions to that, and even he only really contributed and became a success after he stopped trying to be an out and out striker and started linking up with Yorke.

Lots of teams have out an out strikers. Just more often than not they have a more creative an mobile player behind them.

There are a few players which seem to be both a classic number 9 and 10. Henry for me was probably the ultimate as he did both.

All the best partnerships are usually a rvn type with a cantona type behind. Cole and Yorke were great, shearer sheringham for England were great..

Re Andy cole, he was just a **** footballer that had a knack of scoring.. His football improved massively after he came to us because it had too.

He chose to be a big fish in a small pond.

Not as long as I live is Alan Shearer a great. Yes, he's a top premier league striker but that's about it.

    Dirty ****er too.
